Ive had my 360 since launch day, almost 4 years ago now and only after 3 years did I finally get my first 3 red lights. A friend of mine did the x-clamp fix and it worked for about 6 months.
When I got the same problem, I ordered the 360 rrod repair pro kit and that with a 45 minute baking session got the console working for about 3 weeks. I then attempted to retighten the bolts and baked again but for 5 minutes until it overheated with the 2 red lights. It was working for all of 10 minutes. I decided to cook it one last time for another 45 minutes and again it was working but this time I barely got 2 minutes out of it.
Im quite sure its the GPU at fault as the 3 red lights eject and sync buttons give me the 0102 code.
Is there anything more I could do with it, baring in mind Im sick of taking it to bits and putting it back together? lol.
As the topic implies Im now looking for advice, preferably without the mention of getting a PS3 as I already have one lol.
Im assuming not but if I got another 360, would my flashed dvd drive work in it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Unfortunately I can't think of anything else to try to revive your 360.
I'd just a get new one and flash it again.
Using your old drive is problematic I think, as it's locked to your console id or something and you have to patch in the key from your new drive onto the firmware of the old one to make the box accept it. (Not 100% sure on that)
My launch 360 also broke down a year ago or so and I just went and got myself a new arcade unit.
They're pretty cheap now and also have quieter drives and fans, run much cooler, and they come with an HDMI connection.
All of that I think makes an upgrade to a newer model xbox360 worth it.

Thanks for the reply. I will get an arcade and flash the drive then. Im through wasting my time on a 4 year old machine. The benefits of a new console that you mentioned seem highly appealing! Its just a shame to bin the old one lol.

I still havent actually given up on my old Xbox as yet. Ive had some significant progress during the many times Ive dismantled it now.
I did the penny trick which got the console working without having to bake but then instead of freezing and the RROD on powering off and back on again, the machine killed the game 10 minutes into play with not 3 but 2 red lights, which is basically overheating. This seems to have fixed the inital problem and given me a new one. So I removed the pennies and got some thermal pads for the ram chips. Again the game ran for 10 minutes but the 2 red lights occurred.
I did a lot of reading up on it and too much thermal paste on the cpu or gpu isnt good and also the tightness of the screws for the both heatsinks is paramount to the machine working properly. So I removed both heatsinks, noticed Id applied a bit too much thermal paste, cleaned it off, put fresh and less down, tightened the heatsinks back on and made sure they really were tight and also tighten them gradually and alternating between each of them. After reassembling the Xbox in a case of "if this doesnt sort it out, then fuck it", I have Borderlands and have been wanting to play that since the 360 died so Im gonna see if I can get a full hour out of the thing.
I have also been reading a lot about using a heatgun on the chips which I presume is to melt the solder. I dont have a heatgun but that idea, after buying one would be my last resort with this particular machine!
Im not getting my hopes up and I realise everything I try will only ever be temporary but we shall see! Ill report back when it RRODs! Er I mean works for a full hour without any problem!

I have been pretty much in the same boat as you as I have applied everything you have to your 360 to mine. The Clamps, RROD Pro Fix Kit & Different Thermal Paste. I did use a heat gun.
I've had the 0120 error which is the GPU
I've had black spots on the screen while playing a game
I've had the E74 error and somehow fixed it.
I've also had a hard drive go out and I lost my gamertag. Don't know how the heck that happened.
When it worked it would maybe work for 2 weeks after baking it with a heat gun but not a moment longer. Seems the more you use the heat gun treatment the shorter the life span.
I did have a bad laser in my newly purchased arcade that I had flashed by a friend. The drive would not read a game to save it's life. I ended up taking the lens from my old drive and put it in the Liteon and it works flawlessly. I now have a working system. So my old 360 came in handy for parts. I'm glad I didn't pitch it....
I also went the extra mile and purchased the external cooling unit. Yes!!! It get's loud but my surround sound is louder and hopefully this will add some life to my console. I have a feeling I will have to buy one more. I've been threw a total of (6) of these so far. This one is still going but I got it at the start of the year, so it's not been long enough to cause trouble.
Now, since this has happened I am waiting for my xbox live license to expire on my dead 360 so I can play my DLC off-line. M$ once a year license transfer sucks.
My Date is Nov 17th when I can move it from one console to another. At the moment I have to wait until then and play stuff while I'm connected. M$ should allow two a year but I know they will never stoop that low.

I use the heatgun also when doing the xclamp repair and have a xenon that has been going for around 20 months now. But as killabyte said, you have to upgrade the cooling, I have a whisper max and a core cooler.

I already had the xclamp fix and got about 6 months out of my console. After heatgunning a few nights ago, its still working and graphics crash free!

Dammit its died. The heatgunning lasted about 3 weeks! Im not doing it again. I work in a videogames store and we send consoles off to be repaired so that is my next port of call! Ill just send it off as store stock and get a free repair lol. Probably be another reflow but at least it will be done with a professional reflow station or something. It will probably come back BER (Beyond Economical Repair). I should consider getting a new arcade or something but flashing the drive is my only concern.

guys, my m8s just given me his old xbox, the only prob with it is the dvd drive,, it wont read the disks, is that easy to sort out?

a) find out what's wrong with the drive and replace the part(s)
b) get a new drive and spoof it

A new drive only costs about 20 pound.

as long as you can get the drive key from the new box, yes. it's like back then when the liteons came out and the only way to play backups was swapping em out with old drives.

sorry, my mistake. as long as the screws fit snugly into the heatsink holes, you won't need em. i think my screws were a bit too thin back then when i fixed my box, so i needed the nuts.

Very nice heat gun preparation headshot. But why didnt you improve the ventilation of your xbox after heat gunning?? You must know that the soldering is going to melt again after short/long time :-/
My xbox rrodded about 2-3 years ago, xclamped, worked about 2 weeks and rrod, then heat gunned + added fan ---> still working.

Thanks! I didnt feel comfortable with adding a fan. Anyway after heatgunning, it did die after a month lol. Ive just had the 360 repaired via the company I work for so it was free. They have a proper reflow station that apparently costs around £4000. The Xbox has been working for about a week since I got it back. It also has the company's own warranty sticker on the machine and whilst it is in its 3 month warranty I am going to avoid dismantling it again. If it breaks down after 3 months, Ill open it up and look at improviing the ventilation and then send it off for a reflow again lol.

Figured this would be the best place to ask.
Is there any point sending my RROD in to M$ if the warranty sticker is missing? I was careful to remove it and store it on a piece of wax paper, but now I can't find the fucking thing since I don't remember where I put it 2 years ago :/

don't think so...i mean, it's there for a reason.
why don't you try to fix it yourself? it's really not that hard.
you could do a search @ ebay or other places though, i've seen those stickers being sold several times.
