Also, HURRAY for making accounts on every game developer out there ! It's just so fun ! |
Yeah... So frikking annoying. Why don't they just go with Steamworks? Okay, they end up creating a monopoly out of Steam, but it's just so much better for the end user than multiple accounts on multiple dev-and-publisher sites.

whenever i see anything involving net activation and/or net connectivity to use, i start wondering about region blocking. i wonder if ubisoft will employ region blocking, meaning aussies and germans that need to import games (because violent games tend to get censored) will be shit out of luck, not to mention anyone that travels ouside their country and likes to play games on their laptop...
whats interesting though, about the system, is that ubisoft says the games save on both the server and the pc, not JUST the server.. if crackers can figure out how the game and server interact for verification, know what the server is asking for and sending back, then its possible that it'll be cracked quite quickly through emulation or something... either way, i dont think its going to be an issue for us pirates, arrrrrr, as usual the only people its going to cause problems for, and fuck over as usual, are the legitimate owners.

That's what proxies are for, although this would increase the loading/saving times even more I reckon.

I give this a 99% failure rate. It will be cracked within the same day. Waste of resources.

BTW
http://www.tvn24.pl/-1,1640365,0,1,wielka-narada-microsoftu-jak-ballmer-potraktuje-polakow,wiadomosc.html
It's in Polish, but you can use translator if you want. Anyway, the whole article is an interview with a Microsoft Poland's executive. It'is about how Microsoft treats Polish gamers like shit ( still no legal way to have XBOX live account in Poland.) What he said, however, is very interesting:
Quote: | Q: Why is the action "I don't mod- I don't steal" directed towards console gamers, and not PC ones? The PC market is far more at risk of piracy, because all of the users of the Internet have access to illegal software.
A: The piracy is far higher on consoles- at least in Poland. I took part in many conferences regarding that matter. What I always hear is that my role can only be educational. I'm not the police, I can't pursue anyone. |
BTW, as soon as this new "protection" by Ubi is cracked (probably even before street date ) I'm going to happily apply the crack on my original game.

I'm no geek but couldn't they change the connection address to 127.0.0 in the game code and that way you could fool the game

It probably downloads some 1kb file everytime you launch it and after the game checks if the downloaded file is correct it launches. At least I think it's like that.

the game will wait confirmation from the server. so without a server running, ur 127.0.0 can't do that can it?
Sig too big.

I predict pc sales will fail after this one even more so.
Oh and the point is this as well:
Can I resell my game?
Not at this time.
Next gen consoles will feature something similar, they are desperately trying to stop people from selling their games because, according to some greedy motherfuckers, you payed for the rights to play the game you do not own it so you can't sell the rights to someone else so they can play it talk about cash flow, they develop a piece of code and want to sit on their asses for the rest of their lives while people pay over and over for the rights to use that code while they do nothing. Ever.

@maul_inc
True, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age are among the best selling games on the PC and they lack any kind of DRM.
They got as pirated as any Securom/Safedisk/Steamworks game was.

Steam is great when they have their sales, it's just the standard prices I object to. €40-70 for a PC game is daylight robbery and I simply refuse to pay anything like that.

I agree no way im paying 49.99 or even 40 for anything on my pc. I take that back i did spend 80$ ish on league of legends, but damn that game is fun/addicting, so I guess my money was well spent.
Hmm guess that means if you make a fun/addicting game with good online play, even longtime pirates might buy it?
Sidenote, any game thats worth a damn will be cracked / pirated...this ubi game will be cracked the first week if its any good and worth worth bothering with.

I think that's about it in a nutshell, yeah. Make a good game, don't restrict the customer in how the can use it, don't charge a ridiculous sum of money.. and people will buy it.

Ubisoft is digging its own grave with all the crap its been doing lately...
as if screwing Splinter Cell and resurrecting PoP (which had a satisfying conclusion) wasn't enough. Buying the new PoP was just a one-off thing for me, with their new drm I'll never be buying any of their games Not to mention their horrible customer support and I don't even want to pirate their games.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

i agree that their pricing for EU citizens is way to high but if we ignore that for a second I think steam is a good compromise when it comes to protecting the games while making the costumer relative free of annoying stuff.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then, heh. It's no compromise when that "protection" ends up costing €20-30 more than retail stores. I mean, come on! COD4 is still €50! Batman is still €50! ME2 is €60! Those are just absolutely disgusting prices.

Personally, I don't mind buying a good game. Steam is just a convenient way to do so, as I don't give a rat's ass about the boxes or actual DVD's. Throw in the amazing sales Steam has at times, combined with the good download speeds, and you've got a pretty strong platform right there. That said, I don't like to pay the customised EU prices.
No matter how you twist and bend it, here in the EU we get fucked over royally, since even outside Steam, our prices are generally 50% more than the US prices. That's what I'm against really, it's just wrong that a game would cost $50 in the us, and €50 in the EU. Gets worse even, me and some friends from England noticed a game that was something like 30 or 35 British pounds on Steam (the proper USD -> GBP rate), and it was still 50 goddamn euros for the rest of the EU. For those who don't know, 1 GBP is roughly 1.1 EUR, and has been around that constantly for like 2 years now.
And let's face it, 95% of the games that come out are not worth 50 euros, because lately a lot of games seem to be a medioce singleplayer experience, infected with all kinds of console influences. Throw in some of this bullshit DRM which proves to be useless in the end anyway and thus serves no purpose, and you end up with mediocre games that you overpay for because of "piracy" and "PC-specific enhancements", whilst still being a console game running on a PC.

Aye, I can get AVP from Play.com (and I've paid for it already) for £17.99, which is around €20. Guess how much it is on Steam? Fuck that.
