Yo Titanic, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Avatar has one of the best international profits of all time. One of the best international profits of all time!

Guys, just to be sure, you are excited about Avatar's grosses and want to use that to emphasis the quality of the movie, and yet the previous record holder was Titanic?

Titanic was kinda like Avatar. Story not that great. But attention to detail was quite amazing. Just like Pandora.

i dont concider it a reflection of quality, i just think its amazing because every major director out there tries to crack that 1bn landmark, and camerons done it twice. also keeping track of the box office, because titanic had done so massively well that no one could have imagined it would be overtaken.. and yeah... i think how well avatar has done is VERY fucking impressive.

am i the only one thinks Avatar is overrated?
-the story is not that great
-the action is good but no where near as good as Aliens or Terminator 2
-the visuals, HD motion capture are very impressive indeed, but im sure if James Cameron didnt use it someone else will. When it come to using visual effects directors like Neill Blomkamp or Peter Jackson are just as good as James Cameron.
It was an enjoyable movie, but for that kind of success, it has to thank the massive marketing campaign. I saw poster for Avatar literately everywhere, even in WCs.
Sig too big.

well all i can really say to that, is if the story is stupid, the action average, and the cgi is something anyone, even a newbie director, can do just as good or better....
...
... why isnt there a film or 2 every year that makes this much money? perhaps producers are afraid of making huge amounts of cash? i mean if the film was so average and so easy to make, why arent we seeing billion dollar grossing films every year? investment? plenty of films these days invest hundreds of millions of dollars in producing and promoting films, so the money is there - as is the desire to make money, so what gives? a marketing campaign does not bring in repeat viewings, only an enjoyable film does that.
and i disagree on your last point, i dont think jackson, as much as i love his work, i wouldnt say is as accomplished at using effects as cameron is... and blomkamp? at least wait till the guy has a handful of movies under his belt before you make that kind of assumption...
i do partially agree with your second point in some regards. i think for realism those films certainly are better where action is concerned, and creating suspense and adrenaline those films might be better (if not as good), but for sheer spectacle and scope, which really is what the film was about, nah avatar definately comes out ahead.
i really disagree that the film was nothing special and many other people could have done this or done it better... i mean they all try, but they dont get this kind of success... you dont think transformers or spiderman or any other major productions arent promoted like crazy with massive campaigns? if massively successful marketing were to be responsible for any films massive success, it would be district 9 which probably would have gone largely unseen were it not for the amazing marketing work done for that movie.

Do you often write before you think?
That is not the goal of any major director, not even Cameron. It's much more likely they like to make movies that they are satisfied with. I have never ever heard any director speak about a 1bn landmark, 500 million, or whatever, that they make 'this' movie to break a financial record.

@ tutukun - im not disregarding his talent, not at all, all im saying is that its too early to say that he is on that same level as cameron after just one film... give him time...
and i dont think being bored with a film on the second viewing is a measure of its quality... there are plenty of films i concider to be really good films, that i just dont have the desire to see a second time through for whatever reason... high replayability shouldnt really be a measure of a great film i think...
and parallax, yeah ok i went a bit overboard with that 1bn comment, but its true directors DO strive to have their films make huge bank... whether or not thats a major goal or not doesnt matter, but major filmmakers DO want that, because of the prestige it brings, the power over future film control it'll bring them in the future, and also for personal achievement if thats something they value.
all im saying is that directors and producers dont set out to make films that fail financially... its a business, and very few major filmmakers value integrity over cash - all this ties in with tutukun somewhat implying that avatars box office isnt anything special and anyone could do it, and im saying that no i dont think they could, and its certainly not from lack of trying...

Cameron designed the effects for this movie
as in the technology for 3D effects and what not
lucas was saying it'd take at least 10 years for this kind of technology to come back after episode 3.
weta wasn't the only one who did the effects for avatar.
reason why avatar made so much money is the experience and that the movie is simple and anyone can watch it and enjoy it. it's watered down story with an awesome experience.
titanic took months to reach it's 1.8bil status. avatar did so in few weeks...

who cares about ticket sales? lol
dingo_d let's say we own 2 Ice cream parlors and you say "Hey I sold more ice cream than you today," and I say "True, but my ice cream costs more and I made more money than you today."
whatcha think about that
it's not how many tickets you sell .it's WHEN you sell them.sure prices are nflated but its also harder to get ppl into threatres these days due to alt forms of entertainment and the economic climate.
all in all avatar is a monumental success no matter what some ppl say.

Why go to 101 dalmatians when you can see the Hale-Bopp comet |
Well iirc the dalmatians were about 6 or 7 pm, so when the movie ended it was the perfect time (it was dark) to see the comet Oh I wish sth like that would pass again...

No man this release is really kinda fucked up, many frame loses, kinda slow down, flickering etc. It seems like it was a streamrip.

hm i guess we'll have to wait for a proper version of the dvdscr, framerate seems to be all over the place, also i don't get why they chose such a high bitrate, xvid doesn't get any better above ~1mbit. When will these guys start doing the initial encode in x264, which is way better suited and then do a xvid reencode for those that still need it, also the filesize would be smaller with x264 *sigh*
