Hello,
I'm looking for a worthwhile RPG'ish game to play.
What makes a game fun, for me, is that I can build my character up until he/she can beat certain challenges.
Equally important is that my character feels unique. These important points are driven by a great item/skill system.
If I could choose, then everything had to be randomly generated. From encounters to items.
If you had to recommend one RPG, with decent graphics, what would it be?
A few rules:
- It has to have a great item-system. Randomly generated items is preferred (Diablo II being he "king"). At
least it has to be so that seperate playthroughs don't have your character end up with the exact same items.
- It has to give you a lot of freedom to explore. Being very linear is a big no-no.
- It has to allow you to experiment with different character builds.
- It has to have decent graphics (not look like Runescape).
Games I've played:
Baldur's Gate 1 (can't even rememer an item-system other than people dropping only certain items)
NWN (not a fan of the controls)
KOTOR 1 (not a fan of the controls)
Diablo 1 & 2
Fallout 1 & 2 (not really random items, but still a lot to choose from),
Oblivion (boring)
Fallout 3 (quickly became a boring oblivion clone)
World of Warcraft (overplayed it, just seeing a screenshot makes me ill)
Mass Effect (very little freedom, too few places to explore, item system sucks)
Mass Effect 2 (haven't played it through yet, but items - where are they)
Dragon Age Origins (played only very little of it, but typically linear)
So, to summarize: The game has to have:
- A great item-system (randomly generated items preferred)
- As much sandbox-feel as possible
- Decent graphics
Hope to hear some ideas! =)

Well, if you consider Diablo 2 the king, you should seriously give Torchlight a try.

so are you looking for story-driven RPGs or action RPGs? you seem to quote liking D2, so i guess you should try similar games like titan quest, torchlight(pretty much d2 clone), sacred 2(you might not like the controls). they all have pretty nice graphics as well.

1. Torchlight
2. Divine Divinity (The first one, not the second one judging by your requirements)
3. Dungeon Siege 1/2
3. Sacred 1/2
4. Titan Quest
I suggest you start with Torchlight, and I'm sure I missed some.

I've tried those games, Titan Quest (found the controls HORRIBLE) and Torchlight I've only tried that for maybe 1 hour (seems too cartoonish for my taste - but I might look at it again then). =)

I say try again Titan Quest + expansion (what's wrong with the controls ? ).. it's my very favorite arpg aside Diablo. It has great loot, enemies, regions to explore. It also has pretty nice class combos..
Also Dungeon Siege 2, it's similar in greatness and items
you can also try Borderlands.. it's pretty linear, but it has tons and tons of guns to collect - tho it's pretty much a shooter with rpg elements.

I like that RPG-7 haha!
I did try Borderlands but I didn't like how you basically could only choose a gun and a shield =(
I will look at titan quest again, just to make sure. I did try Dungeon Siege 1, which is why I didn't try nr. 2. I didn't like the isometric view in that game, I kept trying to straighten the camera out lol.
I guess I like action RPGS most, but a little story never hurts.
I'll look into that Divine Devinity. Isn't it with typical manga characters (not a huge fan)?

Divine Divinity is an epic in every sense of the word and it has nothing to do with Japan or Manga.

Planescape: Torment is regarded as one of the best RPGs ever.
But it's not an action RPG of course...

Planescape no noubt. But take care its a deep game, with the best story ever, but not for the action-only group.
Drakensang: The Dark Eye wasnt mentioned yet.

But not what the OP wanted. PS:T is very story-driven, heavy on dialogue etc... Gearing up and such is really a secondary gameplay element at best.
Two Worlds is another game that could be worth trying - flawed gem for sure, and many people hate it, but It was fun enough for me to last one playthrough (and the game world is bigger than Oblivion for example so it took a while).

IMHO: Learn to appreciate already mentioned great games.(especially KotoR)
BTW Titan Quest has the same controls as Diablo 2... + Diablo 2 is very linear Hack'N'Slash.
I am sure the Torchlight; Nox; Loki; Sacred 2; Silverfall or maybe even Hellgate: London is your best bet so far.
(But alas you'll end up hating the controls)

Try Morrowind. Abit old but the mother of all sandbox games. Theres a ton of addons and extra stuff that'll get you hooked for months. Its the best open world rpg ever released imo.
