Actually, you are wrong about the second part of your statement, you do need to be an atheist or at the very least agnostic, to understand many many things, those evangelic christians, and everyone in the religiously corrupt news medium aka fox news are unable to understand something as obvious as the so called separation of church and state, to them the mere fact that they permit people with other views in the US is as lenient as they could possible ever become.

Some say McCain lost because of her. Other say "Palin 2012" Now you know why the Mayan's calendar stops at that date - the point of no return.
McCain lost because everyone was looking forward for a black president, most people that voted for him, did so, because of his skin color, not because of his political agenda, add to that the fact that the republican party threw the US into 2 unprovoked and uncalled wars, was one of the major causes for the biggest financial recession since the great depression and completely made a fool of itself due to Bush stupidity, it was almost certain that the democrats would win this one.
The major problem is that people memory span is far to short, and the smallest reason allied to enough religious emotional stimulation will very likely make people vote for the republican party on the next election, and by doing so they will virtually erase all the good work Obama has achieved until that point.
This is why no real progress is made in politics, the back and forth between two completely opposite political parties will undeniable make obsolete all the work done by each of them in the long run.
The way I see it, as long as there is one influential religious person on the planet, nothing will ever truly change.

You do realize that those two big parties are basicly the same?
They share the same interrests and work for the same people. But in the name of the free world, they give the illusion of offering democracy, when in fact the only thing they are offering is corruption and greed.
