Is it finally time to pick one of these up? Target in the US has clearanced the 250 gig slims to 245.00 and from doing a little digging there are some stores that have em for under 150.00. Is it worth it at the 245 noone is buying them near me they may drop again.

they're really good for playing x264 rips on. that's mostly what i do with mine. i also have god of war collection and uncharted 2 still wrapped up for when i get time to play them. uncharted and uncharted 2 plus a good media center for 150 bucks? i'd do it

Wake me up when I can download ISO's and play them on backups. Until then, I could care less about all this.

it does for me. only one step required too. i run the downloaded rip through mkv2vob and voila, ready to play. i never could get an mkv decoded into something proper for the 360 using media center. if i did get something playable the audio was always out of sync. normally took me 4 or 5 steps just to get that far. not bashing the 360 just saying it's way easier for me with the ps3.

360 is good for 'backed up' games, for offline play. ps3's media capabilities usually get used more than its gaming abilities for me. x264 720/1080p is a breeze with mkv2vob

the people here that still claimed that is not hacked{despite IT IS},are probably the ones that are not want it to be hacked. of course, making it to run "backups" or homebrew will take some time, but we still a lot closer for that, that we were a few days a go...

Don't buy PS3 right now. It's too early. When you'll really need it will be twice cheaper. Besides, you don't even know which model you need to buy for this hack to work

The hacker said he used a PS3 that he had been given a year and a half ago from someone.

There is a program called "PS3 Media Server", which can stream MKV files directly to the PS3 without converting. Haven't tried it out yet, though...

Which means the hack may not work on slim PS3s

having to convert a video file / even just a container is not a sufficient solution for me. Transcoding is not a sufficient solution for me either.
No need to sell the HTPC yet then!

Just love the attitude some kids here have about the hacking scene... |
Yep this thread is bringing out the best in some people.
I didn't realise we were surrounded by so many clever people (not).
With the wisdom being displayed in this thread it's hard to imagine that the PS3 wasn't hacked a day after it was released for sale.

Well I meant that he's posted half a sentence that doesn't mean much to anyone and posted a link to Wikipedia.. Kind of ironic, eh?
I know there isn't any proof that this hacker has done what he has said but it DOES look promising. He doesn't need to lie, and if he does lie he will lose the respect he has from hacking the iphone.
I read something a while ago about software being 'uncrackable' on a sites forum, full of people who were cracking lots of different apps. Nearly all agreed that what makes something un-crackable is when the time involved to do it is so long that it's just not worth it, and the person gives up. Apart from that they said everything can be hacked/cracked.

from PS3 hacks from the post of one of it's managers:
Quote: | The slim has the Hypervisor, of course, it just doesn't have Other O/S, but that doesn't matter for the hack to work. |

Quote: | ps3news members of spreading the "leak" malware on GeoHots comments, and there is no comment moderation on blogger. The malware was reversed within 30 minutes after it was posted, and it's not even effective by noob-hater standards..it's written in Delphi and uses a batch file system..that's pretty lame.
EDIT: Malware is definitely from ps3news members, and something is going on with them and that game site. Also they are hating on Geohotz with front page news that slanders and makes inconsistent legal claims.
ANOTHER EDIT:
Geohot wrote:
ps3news, are you serious???
Are you really that jealous? Or do you work for Sony?
People have been hacking video game systems for a long time, back to Bunnie and the Xbox. If I am hit with a lawsuit, I will fight it. I have not, nor do I plan to, circumvent any DRM, which is what the DMCA targets. Get your facts straight. A kid running around posting on a blog that he hacked the PS3 is nothing warranting a lawsuit. |
it seems some PS3 protection Fan boys are quite pissed off right now
