To the people having long loading times, does it happen all the time? While I do have normal to fast loading in missions, the loading time is relatively long in the ship (between decks). Is this normal?

I was under the impression that the animation had to finish before it loaded the next section so for longer movies there is a bit more waiting.

EDIT: Found this funny, somewhat exagarated character movement during conversation.

What animation are you referring to? I have long loading times when taking the elevator within the ship, while in missions the initial loading is fast and no loading is noticeable during the mission.

From the INI files I've read trough the game uses a overlay and shows a small .bink movie during loading, sort of a transition animation between each area and I was under the impression this had to be viewed entirely before it let you enter the area.

EDIT: DefaultEngine.ini

You'll have to try and add it to GamerSettings.ini or the other one in the User folder, GamerSetting might work but the command also might not do anything at all.

LMAO at that!

-----------------------------
On a different note, I've seen more and more people having thesame issue with the game as me (namely the game hanging after clicking on "new game" and selecting any kind of character, whether new or imprted), regardless of OS or HW setup. Anyone here having the same problem? I've just tried running the game on a freshly-isntalled XP SP3 system, with the very same result. I wonder if this is a crack- or programme-related issue.

Edit: just read JB's post regarding the .bik files. Could they be the root of all this fuck-up?

Ah no, I can see the .bik loop 2-3 times when I use the elevator, so it's not the animation loading. I just find it strange that a relatively small room takes twice or even three times the loading time a bigger mission takes.

You can't change the name from what I've noticed, not a huge problem.

Aw... Sad Too bad. Thanks for clearing that up though. Yeah, it's not a big problem, but as I lost my saves and planned to use someone else's char who made the same choices as me, I really wanted to "customize" it to my old character's image. That means appearance, name, and class. If the guy has a different name, it's just not the same for me. Looks like I'll be starting a new character in ME2 after all Crying or Very sad

All hail the TECHNOVIKING!

Single-core fix.

Game runs better than Mass Effect.

Mate, you ROCK!!!!! Thanks a million for the fix; I can now finally check out the game for myself. Thanks again, you've helped out a lot!

Perhaps it does something in the background when on the "base" then?

Caching or perhaps purging existing cached content for other areas to handle memory better, didn't the first game have a few memory leak related problems, though so did Dragon Age, heh.

As for BIK movies causing problems it could be a codec related issue but I don't think many codecs would interfere with that format (Aside from FFDShow for music and sound files, add a exception in that case to block it from hooking to the game.) and the BIK movie player (RADGameTools) is only a player, rest is in that BinkW32.dll file tied to the game.

Other than that you need updated PhysX, VC++ and DirectX distributable runtimes, they're on the disc but not the newest versions available.
(Can't think of much else, game apparently has problems with single core machines and the usual driver updating like the recent 196.xx for NVIDIA or upcoming Catalyst 10.1 for ATI, 9.12+hotfix here and it has worked fine, newer 5000 series of cards have had some problems though or so I've read but it's a bit irregular and seems mainly related to "powerplay" settings for energy savings.)

It's not just loading, it's probably clearing/rearranging the cache as well. Defragment, I suggest MyDefrag, free.

Dunno if it's codec-related or not (I have no codec packs or similar installed whatsoever (not even ffdshow), apart from AC3filter; moreover, I've just tried running the game on a fresh OS), but the single-core fix posted here earlier and in the technical section seems to have worked its magic! I've just briefly checked whether the game launches and it does. Gotta walk my doggie now, will be back for some thorough testing in about one-and-a-half hours, and I'll make sure to let you guys know if there are any more snags.

Thanks for the insight/tips/advice to all who contributed. Your help is much appreciated.

For those of you who want to change the character name, you might want to take a look at this:
http://meforums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=641824&forum=127

I just tried it on a save, I did find the name, and changed it, but as I don't have the game yet, I couldn't test it. So I can't comment on whether it will work or not.

Check the readme.txt, I barely replaced the .bik loading movies, it was someone else's idea.

I was glad I could help, I was kindof, sorta depressed it didn't ran. Now it runs like a goddamn charm. UE3 grew up, lmao.

You find weapons during missions and you can research them(in the prototype section).
Researching also increases your armor efficiency in some ways. But afaik you can only get armor parts from shops(and there aren't many IMO).
Seems most armor sets are dlc. Very Happy

Oh and a sidenote:

Some upgrade pieces so far have been well hidden (You need a certain amount of basic upgrades to research new stuff, plus materials of course.) but actual weapons and armor have been very straight forward as quest rewards or some shops, got a leg piece from some area as well but I'm only five hours in the game. (Still on that asteroid rock you are recommended to visist first.) so my selection is quite limited as compared to the basic weapons I have only found a upgraded pistol and assault rifle plus a researched rocket launcher and those leg plates.

Once I get the DLC functional (Pre-ordered, just needs the key, Thuesday perhaps?) I'll see about getting the Blood Dragon Armor, Infernus Armor and Terminus Armor.
(Dragon is from Dragon Age obviously but the others are special pre-order incientives along with extra weapons and other equipment like from Gamestop or Amazon or the CE/Digital CE editions.)

Also apparently the Zaed DLC (Free with all Cerberus access codes, aka all legit copies of the game.) will add a bunch of equipment as well as from what I've read, game appears to be fairly limited by default without any addons in terms of equipment actually.
(Even the early reviews linked to previously mentioned this.) and what with planet land exploration or whatever the Hammerhead DLC will add (Can't just have the tank for visuals, funny enough it's also referenced in a log you can get from the hangar console abord your ship.) there will probably be more content released as per the DLC based method.
(Which can be a bit annoying, can't just install them like with Dragon Age modules either I guess but I won't know until I try myself once I have found something to try with, haha.)

EDIT: Post ended up in quite a mess, should look better and make more sense now.

The item count is low yes, which is a negative point. But to be honest, the items in the first game were just 5 pieces with slightly different stats and names.

From what I've read you can visit planets and "probe" them to find stuff like resources and hidden quests (Seems there's very few of these though.) but you always land next to the installation or whatever you are visiting and it's "enclosed" so you can't really explore the surrounding like you could in ME1. (Even though that was a pretty barren landscape most of the time with little points of interests scattered here and there to visit.)

Supposedly the Hammerhead APC or Tank or what it is must have something like this to be a useful vehicle no?
(You use a small dropship by default.)

BTW what is the level cap in this game? Do you level quickly or could you play the game twice (ie: normal difficulty, and then impossible like ME1) without reaching the cap?

Gotta say, after playing for 8 hours, the glaring bad thing about this game is the same as Dragon Age.

A lack of equipment. Though Dragon Age had a lot of equipment there were only like 2 or 3 models then just recolored.

Nonetheless, it was you who did it in the end.

I think it's rather a matter of bioware being complete arses (strain the system so you'll be forced to buy new hardware (check sys req too)) instead of this being a fault of UE3. Just how plain bloody stupid is it to put a 720p movie file as a loading screen?
