There is loot but it's like rewards after missions. Also a lot of the skills in the first one were pretty much weapon proficiency skills weren't they? So in a sense nothing really changes since now you can use all weapons, unlike say Oblivion where they took out the skills and the weapons (spears lol).

Sorry for sounding stupid but how do I import my old character? The import character section is completely blank. I presume i have to put my save files in the correct folder for it to work but im not sure where. My mass effect 1 is the steam version so maybe thats the problem.

Run \Mass Effect 2\Binaries\MassEffect2Config.exe and use "Save Games" option.

played for an hour or two past the introductory sequence.
pros:
looks great and runs more fluid than ME(so far no bugs where i already encountered some in ME within the first hour)
controls have been vastly improved and aiming is much more responsive
yvonne strahovski though she does look a bit odd.
refined combat mechanics
cons:
much closer to a shooter this time around
seems to be more streamlined though i haven't reached any open areas yet.
also, i don't fully understand how importing works since i imported a lvl 49 char but still had to start over from 0 though apparently i started with a few bonuses that strolled by too quickly to see what they were.

Everything is reset on import but you get a amount of "resources", money and paragon or renegade points based on your level and alignment, also takes many quest choices into account and companion standings compared to starting a completely new game, unsure what exactly this influences but there's a few posts in this thread that explains part of it.

Mass Effect 1 introduction/presentation was a lot better than this one...
What you guys think?

Exactly. The starting is such a let down compared to the first. Its hard though, to beat out such a well done first act as Mass Effect 1.

I think you are supposed to start at higher level, did you use any cheats (console commands) when playing ME1?

You do not start at your level from Mass effect 1. You start from 0 or 1. That is because ME2 has a 30 level cap unlike 60 in ME1.

I believe the only thing you can change when importing a character is the class.

Have to agree, ME1 I had a better idea of what I was doing and what was going on right away. In this one I was setting out and not really even knowing, it seems like a bit of an oversight to not include some narrative or dialogue to better explain what you're initially doing... but you figure it out.
Still seems good, the beginning was pretty bad ass. Then first hour or so is just trying to figure out how the game works from the weird UI and key binding changes they made from the first game. Why are there just... heads at the bottom of the screen? Can we get rid of those? They look silly.
Edit: Also is anyone else having issues with disappearing sound? It'll work, then I'll quit the game and sometimes when I restart it the sound disappears. I have to fiddle with the config tool to get it back on. Very annoying..

**Minor Spoilers**
When you import your character, it looks at whether you were paragon or renegade, who died, council status and I think that's about it, other than your class and level.
At one point very early, you can change your class, looks, etc. So there is some customization.
As others have mentioned, it feels a lot more like a FPS game now, which I kind of dig. Combat feels more intense and exciting. A huge change is that you now have limited ammo, but I've not really seen how that will impact the game overall. The graphics are much improved as well IMO.
I've only played 30 minutes, but so far I think it's going to be amazing. I don't know WTF people are talking about on the intro. ME2 starts off in spectacular fashion I think. They've definitely streamlined a lot of things and simplified others. I personally have no problem in theory. Most of the shit you got as loot in ME1 was garbage, with only the occasional gem. I'd like to see some randomness to the gear, but I'd prefer a more linear gear and item progression system where the game is neither too hard, nor too easy. This is another aspect that only time will tell how good it is. I don't mind not having to sort through 150 items, selling 90% of the stuff.
No doubt it's going to be great. I like what I've seen so far. It's a bit different, but hopefully the story will be as good as ME1. Parts of ME1 were kind of monotonous, such as some of the planetary side missions and shit, but I thought it had a very good story. We'll see how this one pans out, but like I said, so far it looks great.

Do you have to have Mass Effect 1 installed to import the save games?
As I am unable to do so with the Saved files I have kept....
I have tried through the configuration utility where the only thing I can do is specify the folder where the saved games are kept. It doesn't import the saved game.
I tried the in-game Character import, that doesn't show anything either.

It DAO is any example, DLC will probably be available once it's released (not until street date I believe.)
