Anyone rich enough who bought the deluxe edition which contains 3 10 day trial keys for when the game launches and doesnt have 3 friend i REALLY would like to receive one in PM Ill be your personal bitch for those 10 days
This game is a mess. The ship combat is fun, and wearing down an enemy, only to have two more bare down on you is great. However the lag and the bugs and the bugs related to the lag - just ruin the game experience for me. That this game is two weeks from release, is incredible to me.
I'm Lt-8 right now, almost ready for my first proper ship ... but after reading online, I'm hesitant about my choices. I really wanted an Escort (heavily armour, heavy damage output) but apparently people QQed massively in closed beta so Cryptic SEVERELY nerfed the Escort - so much so that it's called the "Glass Ship" now I'm not a team player, I want a ship I can effectively solo in when needed..
theres a very simple way to obtain a key free of charge.... pop over to play.com buy the pre-order, ket your key emailed then cancel once you`ve registered the key.... works a charm
Now I actually tried STO, but just didn't like it due to bugs, lagging, poor thought out mechanics and the fact that it's like playing a singleplayer game.
But it's good that it's not for everyone I suppose.
Meh. EVE Online contains far, far, far too much micromanagement. It's a stock-broker's wet dream of a game, IMO.
STO is pissing me off tonight though. Spent the last 40mins trying to login, but constantly get "The server is busy at the moment, please try again later" Fuck you, I want to play now damn it!

I've played it in small spurts and liked some aspects and really didn't like others.
I thought the combat could be pretty fun actually - I really enjoyed the melee/phaser kind of thing. It was neat. The ship combat too was surprisingly fun. However, the movement. My goodness. The character movement was very sloppy, reminded me a lot of shadowbane. Found myself getting stuck often. The ship movement was very fluid... almost too fluid.
The lagging of course is something I always overlook during beta, especially during open beta. A lot of people that don't plan on buying spam the servers and such.
The bugs are very common and unless they do a lot of work during the next month or plan on having a super patch come out fast, this is another MMORPG that will be released too soon, and will be a bugfest.
With all that being said, they did a great job with the IP. The Star Trek universe really felt like it was pulling me in. I thought the voice acting was average, nothing to write home about, but it definitely didn't detract.
I'm curious what the high level pvp will end up being like in this game. It could become extremely tactical, what with the movement and shield maneuvering.
Reminded me of SFC3 a lot in terms of the ship to ship combat. I can see the potential in this game, I just wish it wasn't so close to release. I feel like if this was an early beta, a lot more excitement would be swirling.

Agreed completely! The game has massive potential, great - established - source material to draw from (I actually just encountered Naomi Wildman! She's now an Admiral on DS-K7) and the atmosphere is top notch - I reckon it will succeed if only they fix the more glaring bugs and don't just kick it out the door too soon, like it sadly appears they're doing right now.
Battles are fluid and strategic (well, space battles are. Ground battles are just a case of; spam specials, mash "1" and "2" repeatedly. Enemy dies. Move on to next enemy. Space battles are FAR more strategic, requiring proper thought-out strategies if you're going to survive against certain enemies)
Audio is more than passable, IMO. The only voice acting I've heard at ALL so far is the opening tutorial with Mr Sylar-Spock (Zachary Quinto) and, being a Zach fan, I enjoyed it. Music on the other hand is great stuff! Epic music that really FEELS like Star Trek, and the sound effects are nicely reproduced from the show.
What I truly like about it, is the overall gameplay. Unlike other MMOs, this isn't a game that immediately demands you party up with eleventy other players in order to survive. You can effectively solo right from the start and it's not overly difficult to do so. Of course it's easier to party up, but meh... I'm not a social person and I hate having to rely on others. However, for the missions that absolutely require some help; I love the way the game creates automatic parties using available ships in the area. It's like hot-swappable teaming! Jump in, do a mission, jump out.
Great stuff! Fix the lag, fix the bugs, unlock the rest of the systems, and I'm a buyer. I'm giving strong consideration to buying this on release day.

First thing they should change is respawning, as it is now, there's no downside to dying.
Respawning at a homebase (DS7 or some klingon base) would be much better.
So has anyone got their T1 ship yet? What recommendations do you have? I was considering Cruiser (simply because they look bad-ass and have a shit-ton of cargo space and weapon mountings) but I really would prefer a full-on combat vessel.

Well I got myself a Science Vessel, but didnt get the chance to test it out in combat because the servers went down.. Anyway, the science vessel has front and rear phaser bank and front and rear torpedo tubes. In addition to that, you get to target enemy ship subsystems, like auxiliary power/shields/engines/weapons so you can knock those out for a bit..
missions are interesting aswell , getting some quite long ones, which involve doing a lot of different stuff in different sectors (mixing space and ground stuff etc). Quite nice so far.
Btw when do i get the free ship token ? 5 ? 10 ? after a specific quest ?
