Tested this for a bit last night. It's not THAT bad I'd say. Eventhough the spacecombat are kind of interesting. I wish they would have gone for a more personal perspective where you control the ship from the chair on your bridge intsteed of the 3rd person perspective. The ground combat does not seem very interesting, but in all fairness...I never seen any ground combat in the serie that was exciting either. So I blame it more on the IP then the game.

I like how they have other classes then other mmorpgs and over all the charactercreation screen where nice. But the problem I see now is that the game is in some kind of a greyzone...I do not it will attract the normal mmorpgplayer, and it misses a few things to attract the "trekkies".

I've watched the show since I was a child and TNG started, mate. I'm watching Voyager (my favourite one, followed by TNG) right this very second.

I know exactly what Star Trek is Rolling Eyes

What about DS9? Cuz i'm pretty sure, that quite some people - including myself - consider it easily being the best ST there is. In fact, all the star trek series are somewhat different.

TOS is basically an string of brawling matches between Cork *ehm, i mean kirk* and the actual bad guy(s). - then again, what else do we expect from something made in the 60s.

TNG is about solving each episode with some sort of cool TREKnology (just send a properly modulated signal through the inverted tachyon beam which will destabilize their quantum matrix causing a feedback loop and an eventual overload of their core - "Make it so, Mr La Forge"), but still lacks a major story arc for the most part of its 7 or so seasons. I must admit, that i loved this series mainly because of the great acting of Patrick Stewart. Still not my favorite one.

DS9 - while still highly episodical - also features a main story arc, that it follows through. It also has the most ship to ship combat ever seen in any of the star treks, with freakin huge fleet battles Razz Generally speaking, i would put this one #1 on my list, simply because it has the deepest story of all the different series. Not to mention the cool episode with the tribbles they made for the anniversary: Trials and Tribullations.

VOY is well.. its a sad excuse of a series IMO. Its decent in its own right, but by season 7 its gets so dull and boring, that i was literally happy they finally 'made it home'. Sure it has its moments, the doctor is hilarious throughout the series and it really starts out nice and promising, but it settles into the same boring rythm, what you would expect from a 70 year long voyage home.

As for the newest series: while it was not so bad, it was not good by any means either. My biggest complaint was the actor playing the captain, who i remembered from some other sci-fi, and always kept wondering, WTF is he doing on the bridge of a space ship in star trek?
Pretty much the same feeling i got when i saw sylar as the young spock. :/ That was a horrible decision imo. All in one, i was sad when they cancelled this one, as i saw potential in it, but i guess the hardcore trekkies were just too upset that it strayed so far away from CANON.

So well.. I wouldnt dare to say that i know what Star Trek is, simply because it seems to be different with every new movie / series they make. Most people i know consider TOS, the early movies and maybe TNG the most authentic representation of the ST universe, with DS9 closely following them. Voyager is a bit detached and the new series was obviously played in a different space-time continuum so it can differ from the rest of the ST univers any way it wants to.

As for the game itself: I dont dare to try it. I love Star Trek but after being a player of EVE-O, the freakin bar is set so high, that i doubt i will ever be able to enjoy another MMO again. Not to mention the fact, that i find the ideo of 10s of thousands of ship captains flying around in their own space ships to be .. lets just say.. scary and insulting. As others already mentioned, space ships should be 'rare' and precious, and players should work hard to earn the right to captain one of those, while they serve on ships led by others.

This does not mean that some are left with cleaning toilets on a ship, as there might be important and meaningful tasks even for those who are not actually the captain of a ship. Not to mention that even menial tasks can be made interesting and involving and if the player recognizes the importance of it, then they can truly feel like being a part of a team. This kind of gameplay does not suit loners tho, but why should it do so? Its an MMO after all.

All in one, I'm happy for everything ST related, but i find it unlikely that i will even try this one.

Aye, out of all the Star Treks, which I have very little love for (because of various reasons, including awful storyline, toy physics and utopian universe), the DS9 storylines were the most mature ones out of the bunch. A bit more darker too, so that was a plus too. Smile

This is the big miss in this game, because so much of the ST (from what I seen) is what happen on the bridge and the cooperation between crew members. Maybe they could have gone the way to only be able to have a starship if you own a guild? Like a flying guildhall where different people have different tasks to do?

I won't say it's a bad game, but not very good either. Not to hold my attention at least.

There is only one thing i truly dislike with the game and thats the Server setup... that they only have 1 in the US.
Should put out one in Europe too...

Anyways besides that its very fun imo. Sure its lacking in some areas but overall its very nice imo Smile

Just one server. Isn't that because it's beta? I would think they add more servers when the game goes live?

wowza bad lag and while it was great to be the ST universe it felt like the developers had tagged some ST content into a 2001 mmorpg. (or even earlier)

After about 8-9hrs play, I can safely say; I'm loving this!! It has a few issues (lag, v.rare connection drops, weird graphic issues - super-size Tribbles anyone? - and sometimes areas don't completely load) but the game itself, on the whole, is amazingly fun!

they are the same dev that made City of heroes, Champion online etc...
They always only have 1 server if i am not mistaken..
Also the current lag issues is more due to them testing stuff out... they are testing their servers and how much strain they can take etc. Was the same in CO open beta.
When it launches it will be much more stable.

Yeah, I've played like 4-5hs and apart from the Lag (wich is VERY annoying since I'm from south america... so I have the normal server-in-beta lag plus the distance-from-server lag), I love the game.

A new patch just went live. 143MB. No patch notes, obviously, as it's a beta - but hopefully should fix a few of the more glaring issues.

The game is extremely CPU-hungry. Even if you lower the graphics to absolute minimum, if your CPU is not fast enough or is busy doing other things, the game will be extremely slugish. That might be an explanation.

The same is true for the Cahmpions Online.

Mind telling me where i can find it? All I found earlier was some mirrors that sucked. Then again I got a free open beta key so the servers available for those who preordered is out of the question.
