http://www.spacesimcentral.com is a good portal and forum for spacey stuff.
You may try Spaceforce: Rogue Universe. It was a mess at release but after two patches and spending some time learning the controls i found it quite playable. Graphic is really nice but story is crap and gameplay has some length.

Discovery at least comes bundled with latest patch, so just do a fresh install of Freelancer and add Discovery on top of that.

This topic is the first time I ever heard about that crossfire mod, but Discovery is by far the best I tried. In multiplayer, on a permanent server, it's awesome fun to roleplay.

Is freelancer available anywhere on digital distribution or do I have to hunt down a copy in stores?
Also, any of X2/X3 packs on steam worth buying right now? I already have them downloaded but I'd want mod/patch support which I don't know If the scene releases supports (never played any of them much).
How about Darkstar One? Protection messed up when I tried to play it but for 5$ I'd buy it if its good.

For the "X" games you can download any release and then the latest available patch without copying over the crack, this will remove the protection and you don't need to use any modified files, unfortunately I'm pretty certain the Steam deal for the X3:Gold pack has already expired as of two days ago if you wanted to buy it at a lower price.

X:Reunion/TC can be very entertaining BUT i advise you to ignore the trade (besides selling loot). Once you have factories, the money flow is way too big and the game becomes very boring (its way too easy to become silly rich). If you stick to being a mercenary/assassin whatever, its quite entertaining and challenging.
