Both of them seem to be very good and a lot of people here recommend them. I haven't watched any of them (at least I don't remember and if I had, I should remember right? Wink ) and I want to start watching one of them...

Don't make me start watching 24 Sad

Why fuel the fire? zzzz

One is an action drama and the other is a drama based on real or real-like scenarios.

I saw oz when I was in the nl and it was very nice. But I'm not in the ol' butt-rape-prision-action mode so... Which one of the mentioned two? Smile

@Zipf: I haven't seen any of them and don't know shit about them. I will totally base my decision on your votes Smile

And 24. Cool Face Really, it's great series.

Haven't watched The Shield, but The Wire is awesome, though you have to watch like 5+ episodes to get into it, it's horribly boring at the beginning.

The Wire, of course. While The Shield is very entertaining, The Wire is so masterfully done, with such a huge range of characters (all played wonderfully by the relatively unknown cast). No contest, I think.

But you must have read the current rage discussion in the shield thread for you to be starting this where it was made clear tons of times that comparing these series is stupid.

I just zapped into that thread and saw that he recommended the shield and people came in shouting STFU NOOB WATCH WIRE! (might be a little bit exaggerated Laughing ) And leo mentioned the wire several times so... it's up to you Smile

I always prefered the pacing of 'The Shield'. Although the characters of The Wire are more well-written it tends to be a bit too slow.

I also think fisk should be unbanned.

Both shows warrant the attention span of more than 1 episode. Especially The Wire which is build up like a book and the first 3 episodes are basically introductions to the world and the characters and can be considered quite slow in pacing.

I don't have any problems with slow movies / series as long as they are well written and keep my attention. And if I see something with quality, it'll automatically grab my attention Smile

My honest breakdown of The Wire VS. The Shield.

The Wire S1: Slow burn story with good conclusion. Better than Shield S1.
The Wire S2: VERY slow and doesnt pick up where S1 ends. Better than Shield S2.
The Wire S3: A good continuation of S1. Much better than Shield S3.
The Wire S4: Solid continuation of previous season. A bit better than an improving Shield S4.
The Wire S5: An average final season with a great finale. This is where the tide between the two shows DRASTICALLY turns. Aymbasal next to Shield's STELLAR Season 5.

The Shield S1: Fairly procedural. Writing is more standalone to The Wire's serialized writing.
The Shield S2: Again, many standalone eps with a slowly developing continued story. Decent.
The Shield S3: More standalones with a slowly developing larger story arc forming. Decent.
The Shield S4: Glenn Close joins as a larger story starts to form. Almost as good as Wire.
The Shield S5: **FANTASTIC**. All 4 seasons lead to this. Better than any season of Wire.
The Shield S6: Very, very short season. Too short, but a great setup to a perfect S7.
The Shield S7: EPIC MASTERPIECE. Between The Wire and The Shield, this is hands down the BEST season between both series by a longshot. INCREDIBLE ENDING.

Overall both series are very good. Basically The Wire had a serialized plot but it was also very slow moving. The writing was very consistent but it also never really improved, and imho the final season was just average at best.

I felt The Shield started as an inferior series to The Wire, and its early seasons had many of forgettable standalone episodes. However, in Season 4 the writers started to really develop a more serialized plot which ended up surpassing the serialized storyline in The Wire. While less consistent, I would say the Shield post Season 4 had the best writing of both shows. While The Wire had a rather traditional and more low-key final season, The Shield had an EPIC Season 7 with HUUUUUGE payoff (My favorite series finale of all time).

Basically if you are new to both shows and are on the fence, it's like this. The Wire is paced similar to films like Saving Private Ryan or Zodiac, while The Shield is more like Inglourious Basterds or Se7en.

Well, as I said before I haven't seen any episode of The Wire yet, I'm halfway through season 2 of The Shield and I'm finding it to be completely superb, so after what has been said here I definitely won't stop watching The Shield until the ending, I'm curious though to watch The Wire, but not as curious as checking for myself just how epic season 5 and season 7 from The Shield really are.

Consider yourself lucky that you have BOTH series unwatched. You have a great time ahead of you!

Me vote vent for The Shield. No particular reason really, they are both equally awesome in their own way.

The Wire is extremely slow and especially in the first season. It takes till about the 7-8th ep of the first season before it finally picks up and shit starts going on. Although you need to remember that it was designed to be as real as possible so it's not exactly HURR ACTION.

Its easy, The Shield.

But that doesn't mean that The Wire is worse or anything. If i had to choose i would go with The Shield anytime. The Wire is just different.
Seasons with Glenn Close and Forest Whitaker ROCK!

Both are awesome, totally up there with The Sopranos.. The Shield is a bit more brutal and has, imo, a bit more interesting main characters than The Wire.

The Shield I'd say is easier to get started with, and it has a continuous over-arching plot with the same central cast of characters. The Wire OTOH has a large cast (some of which who only appear for one season) and the seasons themselves, while related to each other, are also more self-contained in the themes and subject matter they portray.

Definitely get both, but since both are quality TV does it really matter which one you go through first? Razz
