I think that just means you can't use crossfire but should be fine with a single card.
probably you want the ATI 5870 (around $400 at newegg)

What upper hand that would be? I can think only one advantage over Nvidia, and that's EyeFinity. Nivida has Physx, CUDA and better drivers with less problems in games.
HD5870 is no faster than GTX295 in DX9 and DX10.

And as usual, the nvidia fanboy comes in here slating ATI.
Before I continue, your motherboard accept the card just fine and dandy, you just won't be able to crossfire the card which..is overkill with the power they have unless your doing some hardcore eye infinity, I'm using my 5850 on an SLI board.
the HD5870 is a single GPU graphics card that keeps up and sometimes out performes the GTX 295 (a dual GPU card) all while using about 100 less watts of power and also runs cooler. This isn't an opinion it's a benchmarked fact.
As of now yes, ATI does in fact have the upper hands with faster more efficient cards and nvidia hasn't put anything out since there, yet again, rebranded last generation card (G210 to the G310)
The fastest card if you really want to blow money would be the 5970, but that's if you want to do some heavy shit.
nvidia gets there drivers updated quick, that's about the only good and there cards run good. People slating ATI drivers as huuuuur so many issues! are normally just nvidia fanboys. I've had my 5850 for 2-3 months now and the ONLY thing I've had an issue with is the saboteur which I could really care less about since it's just a mediocre GTA clone, same with a lot of the others who own the ATI cards including iNatan, Epsilon, Sabin etc.
Instead of listening to the ramblings of fanboys, check out benchmarks.

With your cash flow you can either spend about 400 on a 285GTX
Or go with the 5870 for the same price
And get better performance, or you can do as the all knowing glottis says, spend about 550-600 on a 295GTX and get the same performance as a 5870
Ya you can blame shitty drivers all you want, but it's a computer, what works amazingly well for you may work like shit for everyone else. What nvidia does make they make well, I've owned geforce cards since the 7900GS KO. ATI had a rough run up till about the 48xx series and now the 58xx series are amazing cards, which is why I retired my 8800GT

i have a p5n-e SLi mobo (since 2007, and till thursday)
it has a nforce 650i chipset (northbridge) and in my opinion is one of the best LGA775 mobo's out there.
for the cpu ... i have a e6320 atm (till thrusday !) which is stock 1.86 ghz and i ran it for over a year @ 3.5 ghz ! (OC'ing fsb from 266 to 500 before hitting a "hole") memory can be unsynced (good thing). (PS : using stock intel cooler in a good aired case (3x 120mm intake, 1x80 intake, 1x120 exhaut, 1x140mm exhaust, 1x 120mm in case and a active northbridge cooler !=)
obviously it is a SLi mobo, not a cross fire, HOWEVER a single ati card should and willl be as good supprted as a single NVIDIA gpu. Of course it uses pci-e 16x (v1) (8x + 8x in SLi mode, but thats irrelevant here). (the board uses a chip to tell if its in dual or single gpu mode !)
Anyway, you get a new mobo eventually anyway (since lga775 isn't supported anymore) but for now, getting a last gen GPU (58xx something from ATI i guess) it wil handle it more than good (today, gpu's are bottlenecked by cpu anyway, nothing else).

If you're going for highrange card, you gotta get a DX11 card = ATI
(I'm usually rooting for nvidia for midrange cards)

Odd thing is, people btiching about ATI drivers was the main reason I haven't used ATI for so long. After the 8800GT I thought ATI really did have problems and they were plagued, I was so impressed how ATI recovered themselves after the 2900 series I figured I'd give em a try to see if they redeemed themselves, I've had A LOT less issues with ATI drivers than I ever had with nvidias. Though I do admit, I fucking miss nvidia's control panel

Indeed. Paying $600+ for a video card is a bit ludicrous to me. All I wanted was something that I can play my games on all high with. I found it. I'm satisfied. Thanks all

could have been considered to be a very good joke, all depends if you like or dislike me / ATI.
I thought it was funny how someone after all these years bothered to post how ATI drivers are crappy to make someone not buy a good card, and when this person reported back that he was very happy with his purchase and everything worked fine i figured ill make fun of that fact in highly sarcastic manner to make fun of those guys.
anyway it feels good to see i get some support on these forums, <3 you all even if you have intel/nvidia systems.

Just to throw another in here; I *love* my 4870 and simply see no reason to further fund nVidia's bullshit practices. My next card is a 5870 (soon, baby!) and I'll just laugh at people whining about drivers. As SpykeZ said; the only game giving me issues? Saboteur. Guess what else? nVidia users ALSO suffer issues with that game.
Blame Pandemic, not hardware manufacturers.
