Hi guys,
Yesterday while playing MW2, my PS3 started acting weird. At this point it's one year old (warranty expired late november), so I can't return it to Sony. While playing, i suddenly started noticing lag. Since it appeared like network lag, I switched games twice. That didn't work as it still lagged. Then I noticed scratching noises coming from the blu ray drive (which are usually very quiet). It sounded like my old DVD Drive on my desktop as it struggled to read a disk. I have a feeling, the lag may be from skipping data on the BluRay or something? Is that possible? I took the disc out and there weren't any scratches on it (minor or major). Restarted the console and the lag remained although less frequently (still, every 20 seconds gets annoying).
History: It has frozen on me on various games 5-6 times over the last year, twice of which (and the most recent) were during the BFBC2 beta which runs of the HDD.
What do you guys think the problem is? Should I replace the system? Or is something else the problem here that i might have missed?
Its quite possible the drive is dieing. My sons 360 was acting the same way, then the grinding noise, then disk read error after disk read error.
From what i have heard on the interwebs, that when PS3 do fail, it the blu-ray drive a lot of times. I wouldn't go out and just replace the console before diagnosing what the issue is and the price to fix it.
The obvious question is "how good is the condition of the disks ? any scratches?"
Not a single scratch on it. Still perfect. For some reason, there was no skipping today when i played and the drive was a bit quieter but still noisy.
I'll try MW2 again tonight and maybe other games that don't install and report back.
Just had a two hour session. Played fine now. The drive isn't making as much noise and it only "skipped" 3-4 times in 2 hours. This is very confusing. My freezes + this issue makes me wonder if i should replace the console.
1:56 ... That is the sound it makes, which is very common and my Ps2/Wii/PC does that every time. But I've never noticed the PS3 constantly make that noise while I play. It usually only does it when loading a game. I don't think the sound itself may be a big issue since MW2 doesn't install to the HDD thus requiring more loading, but the earlier skipping + freezing scares me.
Should I be worried about anything? Or am I just paranoid?
So, is that the grinding noise you were talking about? Because as you say that's a normal sound for when you first put in a disc to be loaded. I've not played MW2 on the PS3, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to work, but I suppose it's possible for the game to get stuck loading in a bad set of circumstances (maybe the lag you were experiencing didn't help). I know FIFA 10 had a bug with disc access problems - and would constantly spin and spin... but this was software related, not hardware related - so wasn't an indication of a dying drive. It could be a similar case with your MW2 experience... or, it could not () sorry I can't be of more [/help]
Freezing in games is nothing to get concerned about though, I've had my share of freezes and it's always been the software at fault - to the extent that patches were released for well supported games like WipEout, and no patches released for poorly supported games like World Championship Snooker. Despite being the console that can do everything™ it can't always recover from 'crashes' like a modern PC and so sits there like a rabbit in headlights.
...as for whether you should replace it, I think you take your chances either way. Is it just MW2 at fault or do other games and films throwup similar issues?
@Ispep: Hmm, your probably right. I've experienced some lag but it only happens 2-3 times (for a couple of seconds ea) every 2 hours or so. I am beginning to believe it was network lag since during a round of search and destroy, our server switched hosts and began to experience insane lag. There was a guy about 2 meters away from our bomb with no one else but me there and he never got to it in the next 20 seconds. All I heard on the mic was people going "WTF" and "NOOOOES" ... So it was happening to everyone. Its just that no other MP game (PS3) has ever lagged for me before so I wasn't used to it. Plus the freezing had me worried in the first place. I guess I wont replace the console till it happens in another game or an offline game.
Thanks for all your replies guys.
