Oops. Sorry, should have mentioned that.
Well my budget is stretched rather thin atm so I'd say 150-180
(I know won't get me something high end but I'm just looking for something decent that'll last me a good while. I don't need to play games at constant 60 FPS with awesome AA at 1600x1200 or whatever).
Is there something halway decent there or would I have to up that number a bit?

Yeah, get a 4890 and keep the X2 4200+ for now.

Yes, and considering most of the GTX 2XX line is either already discontinued or soon to be, nVidia is a sinking ship for now.

By the time they fix their shit together, get some higher yield count and Fermi comes out, ATI will probably release 7870 already.

Sinking ship my ass, you're thinking too far ahead, the guy wants to play games now, he's not interested in your opinions about the future. He's gonna have to upgrade anyway in a year or so, so who cares.

He'll care when the card is discontinued and a month later his card stops working. Well tough for him, nVidia has nothing to replace it with. Money well spent.

Fermi is actually finished but they need to fit this shit into a computer and keep it cool so that it doesn't melt down your house

what x2 is that? 939 or AM2?
None the less those clock speeds are going to rape any new card you get. my X2 4400 was bottlenecking to the point where I saw absolutely NO increase of performance going from an 8800GT to my 5850.
I did my first OC from 2.2ghz to 2.8 and I saw about a 40+FPS gain in some games. Dragon Age I was playing with 15-25FPS and now I never really go below 35 or so unless I hit a memory leak and I see it as high as in the 50's.
@ leo, depending on the vendor he gets the geforce from, some of them are VERY cool about such things. evga I've seen replace an older card with a newer model. Friend of mine had an 8800GT die and evga gave him a 9800GTX in place of it (they were out of 9800GT's at the time)

Yes, that's all good and fine, but nVidia's "newer models" are nowhere to be seen, while they are phasing out and discontinuing the GTX2XX line. It's that bad.

Let's see, in 3 years time I've gone from 8800GTS to 9800GTX and to another 9800GTX. First one lasted 19 months, second like 14. Yes, cards can break. Granted, this was the G80/G92 series which have a habit of dying, but bad parts do happen.
And how is it unsupported you say? It already is, the only NVIDIA cards you still are the ones that were left in stock, they're not being produced anymore; that includes the GT200 series.
Quote: | P.S. : In the meantime, ATI users with high-end cards try to make current games work properly, lmao. |
Which current games would that be? In 99% of the games the 5850 seems to be outperforming the GTX285 at a lower price point? :E

Get a 4890 vapor x
http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/info/p610628_1024MB-Sapphire-Radeon-HD4890-VAPOR-X-GDDR5-PCIe.html
160 euros
running that card myself, OCed from 850 to 910 24/7
To give you an idea about speed, i played all my games at max settings perfectly at 1080p with an ATI 4770 besides ARMA 2 . Now with the 4890 its a bit overkill for all my games, which means even if i had the money i wouldnt buy a 5870 at this moment cause i dont see the need for it.
Hope this advice in the huge fanboy where nothing but 500 euros cards are worth it forum world helps.

Well, I've been an ATI fanboi for quite some time and to be honest I don't give a damn about physx (when I saw the Arkham Asylum comparison videos I was like "nice but I don't need steam/flying sheets of paper etc.)
@SpykeZ:
Erm. Had to check it in CPU-Z. It's an AM2.
Any pointers on overclocking that piece of cr... hardware? |

Actually, they've just re badged the GT210 to GT310 to have something in teh GT3xx-series for the holidays. And the GT210 was already a piece of ¤%$& to begin with. It's the normal nVidia shenanigans. |
Yes, that's true, but I don't think anything is planned for the high-end market for now from nVidia, just the mid-range.

as long as they release SOMETHING. I'm pretty sure ATI is getting a bit cocky now with their uber awesome sex cards. I can't wait till I get my computer built so I can let my 5850 unleash full fury

The 4890 is the best budget choice by a mile right now. Heck, I've been on NVIDIA for nearly five years now, wanting to make the switch back to ATi because of their ridiculously good price/performance ratio :/
Not even the 57xx's are worth the money for the DX11 support compared to the 4890.
@ Leo/Spykez: Don't know how much you guys follow the hardware world (I'm guessing you do really), but NVIDIA is actually moving to a third batch of silicon for consumer-ready Fermi hardware. Given typical cycles, that'll mean we get something new from NVIDIA in March at the earliest?
Plenty of time for AMD to revise even further, so either NVIDIA has some major trick up their sleeve, or this round goes to ATi

I just hope AMD can start doing with their CPU's what their doing with their video cards. the Phenom II was a good step in the right direction. The AM2.....god.... what a big bucket of fail sauce

If Nvidia is indeed a sinking ship then ATI will have no competition and prices will sky rocket, and I've only owned one card which was a 9700 Pro and it worked fine but I was never a fan of their drivers or their control panel. Hard to believe Nvidia is going down, they bought out 3DFX and in the end they go down due to the economy. Maybe they'd have a chance if Intel bought out Nvidia, then it might be a little more ballanced.

nvidia wont be going anywhere, ATI had there bad times in the 2900 days.
Problem i see is that ATI was always cheaper while being faster at the same time comparing to nvidia cards. Only thing nvidia had going for themself was that with the 8800 series they had the fastest card on the market which they could price as high as they wanted, also it made noobs buy the less fast nvidia cards just cause nvidia had the fastest card.
So i dont have any doubt that the next nvidia card might be able to take the performance crown for a single card, but at what cost? MY 4890 is overkill for current gaming, no matter what anyone else might say, i cant imagine what you NEED a 5850/5870 for, it simply makes sense to buy it if you need a major upgrade and have the money for it, but no games requires that kind of power, not to mention the 5970.
So if the nvidia GT300 is faster, i dont see why everyone will want one right away. Games dont need it, and if its faster than the 5870 it will priced above it.... so we talk about alot of money for performance no one really needs. Only way i see nvidia recovering is taking that gt300 technology and compete with the 5700 series in performance AND price. But many buy nvidia only cause its nvidia.
