Undying was very disapointing in that department imo, they used too many monsters. Hordes of monsters is never scary. Horror is about buidling up tension and thats where Undying fails.
I'm really looking forward to Call of Chtulu, they seem to know what they're doing and NOT just use hordes of monsters that are attacking you and calling that "scary".

I played it, even finished it, never saw the "OMG SO SCARY!" aspect of it. I guess killer cyber monkeys aren't exactly my definition of terror.
There were a few creepy parts though.

on System Shock 2 i agree with the scary part, especially the voice logs you find all over the place. That was good voice acting and you really got into the whole thing by listening to them "record their thoughts" so to speak. Also what made it scary in part was the fact that you knew from the beginning that you're alone on that bigass ship except for that chick which later turned out to be something else.
Also i just remembered another game i thought was very scary at the time, The Legacy, a MSDOS RPG from Microprose. I remember one level in particular that had human skin on the walls and floor, sick shit that was.

My vote goes to AVP 1 and AVP 2 Marine missions. The pulsing radar was responsible for number "holy shit" moments. You knew something was coming, you knew it was nearly on top of you, but you couldn't see anything. All out of flares and lights, just waiting for it to drop down and eat your ass. Then fighting for your life as you were swarmed from all sides, it was classic.
The Suffering also gets an honorable mention, however it was more of a psych. thriller, like someone above mentioned. The scare factor (for me) in that game, came from learning of the fuked up history of the prison/island/asylum. The monsters themselves I really didn't find scary at all. The doctor sure scared the hell outta me though.
Still haven't played through The Cradle mission in T3, looking forward to it though. However, I dunno if it'll really be that bad, I have my doubts for some reason. Mainly, because if your playin right, YOU are the one scaring the shite outta other people
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

System Shock 2 definitely. People who dont find it scary probably either cheated or didnt play it on a difficult enough level to be afraid of the monsters and creatures cos their character could kill them all easily. Cos when you know they can take you out easy and you hear the monkey's sounds echo down corridors and around corners but arent sure which side of the corridor he is from you, its damn freaky. To this day when ever i hear any normal monkey sound on tv my first thought always goes to System Shock 2.

Regradless of the difficulty level, SS2 is not easy game. However, I didn't find it all that "OMG I SHIT MA PANTS!" scary - freaky, sure. Scary? not a chance. I know the terrorists can take out my character in Raven Shield in one shot as well, does that make it scary? there is a difference between tension and fright you know.

I guess SS2 was so scary for me because I sucked at the game. I missed a lot of ammo pickups or was too afraid to. So I spent most of the game with my crappy pistol and like three clips of ammo.
Also, I got into the mood and kinda played the part. I was scared out of my mind HEARING the things and not knowing where they were. BTW< a hint for those of you turned off by the gfx, download the Rebirth mod for SS2 (use your leet google skills), and that makes the enemies a little less... blocky.

Fatal Frame (aka Project Zero) is the scariest game hands down.
AvP as human is pretty scary too.

Resident Evil made me poop...
How long before games become SO realistic they have to put a health warning on the box? ie 'If you are of a nervous dispostion and play this game you could suffer a cardiac arrest'.
Not long imo...

You guys...have no idea what you are speaking of. The suffering? It reminds me of when Resident evil 2 first came out and you played it. It was an intense horror game that scared the crap out of you if you had not played Resident Evil 1 much. But Resident evil is no longer scary because everyone is so used to it now. ....But there is one game I played...one game which left my heart to actually jump while playing it the first time. ...UNDYING. Seriously,if you have never played it before. Try it out. The eerie sounds..and much more are just freaky. That is due to the guy who made it though. The same one who made Hellraiser made it so what else would one expect? Heh. But one game topples undying. And the creator of such a game has an even more insane mind. ..That game is the Silent Hill series. It's not scary..? ...Laugh at me because I said it is scary? ..You have no idea. And when the room comes out. I'm sure you will shit your pants.

I don't know if anybody has mentioned but these two games are amazingly freaky....
Eternal Darkness
Silent Hill 1
Now those are two top notch freaky games....I think the only thing that comes close is probably the resident evil remake for gamecube
