You kidding, right? You are going to miss on a great game because you have to use some tool for 5 minutes? That's just sad...

"Win32/Heur" Probably means "Heuristic" which is a sort of experimental scan that takes many different signatures instead of just the ones from the "definiton" file so ANY loader and injector program will be detect as it alters memory, in this case perhaps it loads/hooks into the Steam back-up EXE to "fool" it into installing the software instead of using a repacked custom installer?

makes sense ,
however the av is picking it up as i simply highlight it in explorer , before any kind of install attempt etc.

interestingly i have read this detection was also present in Batman Arkham reloaded in about 30% of AV products.

in that case it was actually used by the group to bypass dvd detection or some such.

I know it sounds sad , but I am going to give it a miss, I was hoping to try it out and base my findings on a purchase descision, the additional install hoops and virus alerts have put me off, I will wait for a demo and try it then

I've downloaded rld's rls. Are these files some kind of an update for the game? Do they fix the known and spoken in this therad crashes. I haven't installed the game yet but wanna make sure i these are the files that prevent the game from crashing...

No, I'm not kidding. This game isn't exactly on my taste that's why I will probably skip this position.

The installer just worked for me, strange that some ppl get the error. I just got that RLD Messagebox and the installer continued.

The game rocks, I'm thinking about getting the retail. I sure as fuck aint gonna pay for the steam version, which is like paying for air in my book.

The art and gfx in this game is just unreal ... very cool adventures and stories/quests as well. Anyone who likes the Total War series and RTS/RPG mixes should check out this gem. After the patch it's rock solid.

Easiest (Or perhaps it's better to say safest?) might be to delete everything but the SIM/SID stuff or rather the archive files and unpack them with a different method, doesn't need a installation or something if you use SIS or what it was called though it might require a few command line arguments but you won't need the installer stuff and that .dll file on the other hand. Played a bit of the tutorial, and I get the feeling the game should be running better than it does. Scrolling is the least smooth detail, giving the impression the game as a whole is running slower than it is.

I get around 40 fps when the camera's static, 30- when scrolling and 20-25 when zoomed in to ground level (seeing the troops marching/fighting and all). 1280x1024 and High settings.

What are your experiences in this regard, guys?

EDIT: I briefly experimented with Medium settings on the main map, and surprisingly enough, I didn't get better frame rates. There's something fishy going on.

I have a Core 2 Duo e8400 @3ghz, 4ghz OCZ and gtx260 and all maxed at 1680x1050 and it runs very nicely at all times, except just a little bit of jerkiness in extreme detail stages like the stronghold battle at Vicoronium, which has MANY ultradetailed mindblowing details/buildings.

But it runs very nice and the view range is extreme ! And awesome effects !

Maybe your choice of quad core is failed, or maybe your choice of ATI ?

On another note, ShadowB do you have Gratuitous Space Battles legit ?

It's a great game indeed. Never played the Total war series, since I wasn't in to that kind of genre. But add rpg to it and I'm all over the game. Laughing
After patching the game I've encountered one crash(bought version) that occured after the fight was over...lost it though,so no biggie. Smile

Yeah, perhaps that's it... I hope it is, at least. I'd hate to think there's a hardware problem somewhere.

As for the quad core, it's the cheapest one around (spent a lot on the 5850), but it should still work pretty well.

I get quite good framerates but I've read that others with the new 5000 series of GPU's have had performance issues, most likely driver related as not everything is worked out yet (For example 9.11 optimized and improved quite a bit and even added a bit of extra quality to the SSAA mode but ATI still recommends a older beta version for 5970 users for optimal usage so there are a few things to work out still, similar to older forceware for the NVIDA 8000 GPU series compared to recent drivers as a comparison.) however test to disable any forced AA and AF modes if any and also try to disable Catalyst AI as that might help, in the worst case rename the EXE file to something like Empire Total War or any similar title uses to force the Catalyst drivers to load a different profile (This game doesn't have it's own profile yet so this is very likely to help.)

Game runs as smooth as oil running down on a latex clothing here on 5870 (+9.11 cat). Haven't had any performance problems thus far.

Why doesn't ATI just make a utility for adding custom "profiles" like nVidia allows with nHancer? Very stupid on their part, as usual, when it comes to their software.

True (EDIT @ Inatan's post that is, sorry.), so far I've been using a hex editor to their driver .dll files to find the latest EXE names added (Between 9.11 and 9.11 hotfix there's only Dirt 2 plus a somewhat newer build of the main drivers and CCC, recommended anyhow though until 9.12 proper, heh.)

Renaming the EXE works most of the time though but not all games are compatible with existing profiles albeit using them isn't a problem as such but might lead to smaller visual errors or flickering or some such things.
(Borderlands finally has it's own profile but Bioshock.exe improves performance further - And allows forcing of AA although shadows might hamper performance as mentioned in a wiki article about tweaking that game, but it can be fixed by reducing shadow quality via INI editing - and as of 9.11 also fixes missing texture errors although AF filtering is still semi-borked, probably due to optimizations for the new AF mode in the 5000 series which is a bit "smoother" albeit visual differences are quite hard to see as such from what I've seen.)

Also unlike what many people think it's not just Crossfire related albeit that is even more critical for proper scaling (Which "mode" to use for example.) but also contains optimizations and "tweaks" like allowing Oblivion or UT3 to work with forced AA for example. Smile

All of these are editable in nHancer for nVidia cards, as far as I know. It's just very silly to hold something like this private, when it takes them so long to make profiles for games (but surprise surprise, Dirt 2 is "AMD Fusion" game, so a hotfix is out even before the demo is out).

Thanks for all the good information, JB. Smile

And iNatan, I suspect ATI profiles are more intricate than Nvidia ones, which are just a particular configuration of Nvidia Control Panel settings (if you mean the profiles I think you mean). But yeah, the CCC could use a lot more options.

I guess this is the (first and) last time I buy a bleeding edge card. Didn't know they tended to have so many driver issues on launch. Looks like hardware manufacturers release (luckily not physically) unfinished products just as much as software developers. Razz

No, actually mean this (among other things):

This is not available on the regular NVCP as far as I know.

The end justifies the means, that's what I'm willing to say on they subject. Laughing I bought an 8800GTX, and if you think ATI drivers are shit, you should have seen the nVidia ones for that card, especially for the then new Vista. It literally took them months to make a decent drivers, and then a few more to make them as good as the XP drivers (meanwhile, the ATI Vista drivers were better than the XP ones after about a month).
But yeah, after the rocky start, the 8800GTX rocked for a long time, so... Smile
