Yes, I think Steam is crap, but hey, if i was Valve, i´d love it.
But as long as i get my games for free, I don´t bitch and moan about it all the time!

The duplicate key issue is for old version of HL1 and CS...some HL2 got this too but Sierra made this a few years ago so technicly the 90 days rule dont apply.

Half-life 1 was released 10/31/1998 and CS retail 11/08/2000 so from then till mid 2002 Sierra produce alot of those games since they didnt thought it will be a total hit so they had to duplicate keys cause they already used all the key possibilities....so thousands of people got screwed with that when STEAM was released.

You think they just randomly create keys and slap then on the manuals? Of course they have every key they've ever generated logged, how else do you think they check it when you try to play online dipshit.

They don't.
A valid key has to follow certain creteria.
If you type any random ####-######-#### combination you probably won't end up with a valid key. The programm will reject it (and it doesn't even need to connect to the internet to do that).
The key has to match the creteria (which are of course different for each game).

These creteria are used to check if your key is valid. It does not check any database. It only checks if the key matches the creteria and if no one else is using the same key at the same time.

Since not every ####-######-#### is a valid key, the number possible keys is much much much smaller than 100,000,000,000,000 (the possible combinations in ####-######-#### format).

For HL1 all possible valid keys have been used up. This is a fact and has been confirmed by sierra.

Same thing for CS Retail till they made a reprint for the release of Half-Life Platinum 2.

So for those who bought this one
a few years ago they might get key already registered issue.

They reprint new keys for and since they still sell it in store you are under the 90 days free exchange policy.

How can that be true when you can use a generator to create a cd-key that is valid offline, but not when you play online?

If it was as simple as a program checking if it follows a certain criteria then it would work online, as long as no-one else if using that exact same key at the same time (which is unlikely).

Exactly what I was about to say... This might be how it works with offline programs or things like that, if it worked like this for CS then you could come up with a keygen, which hasn't happened... although i supposed it would be harder to come up with an algorithm for the key if it cant be checked offline... oh well i dunno

I still don't see the problem if 1.) a new one can be exchanged for free 90 days after purchase and 2.) this isn't a widespread occurence, it is very rare.
