So i saw a system today, it's £249.99
LG HT554PH 5.1Ch Home Cinema System
It's main purposes is for Xbox 360/PS3, but also i can run the pc on the tv so it will all come through the system, via optical, my question is, is this a good system for it's pricetag? if so, ill be getting it tomorrow afternoon, just wanted some opinion's first.

Especially the LCD TVs, the speakers are very bad. They are very thin, so there is a very small sound boxes, so everything sounds like it's coming from lowpass+highpass filters.

manufacturers often produce some meaningless statistics about those kind of products
a product can actually use 500W but how much will actually be delivered as sound?
the RMS (Root Mean Square) specification in SpykeZ post makes it already a lot more reliable
it means that these speakers can really deliver that wattage
still does not say much if it is also capable of doing that dynamically:
going from very low volume to a wall of noise in a fraction of a second
the amplifier needs to be able to deliver that

I have G51 as well and they are fucking loud just like SpykeZ said, and they are connect to my PC
I also have ONKYO HT-S3200 5.1 which I got for $270 that is connected to my PC as well for now, waiting for a good deal on a LCD this coming up black friday
Only use onkyo to watch movies in 1080, since i put them nicely around my room while my G51 are cramped on my somewhat small computer desk..

that sub looks kinda shitty...
I had this one:
best computer sub ever!
its really big, it has a 10" woofer, you can really call it a sub unlike most PC speaker subs
tried master and commander on it, you can feel the sound pressure... really impressive!

I have one Subwoofer, and 2 speakers. It works pretty good for me. I don't want my Neighbours complaining. The whole set is pretty old now and I don't have money to replace. That Subwoofer can really shake some windows.

As long as they work well there is really no reason to replace them. I know a few people with restored 70s sets, claiming there aren't as good sets these days.  That's audiophiles for you, hehe, willing to spend a lot of cash restoring some old stuff for some imaginary quality improvement lol. |

A friend of mine bought a cheap ass pioneer surround receiver, it has no problems with his 2x10" cerwin vega + some strange ass brand center and 2x8" (or something) cerwin vega in the back. Cerwin vega is known to be "easily driven" tho.
Has HDMI in and out^^

I'd suggest buying a real receiver, and then finding a 5.1 speaker system separately (rather than some half assed home theatre in a box with 0 HDMI inputs). I guess maybe if you can use HDMI inputs on your TV it won't be a total waste though ... looking at the manual though it looks like there is just one stereo audio in and one digital RCA...

but honestly, the receiver is supposed to be the heart of your home theatre (basically everything should run into it, and just send video to TV via HDMI), no point cheaping out. The PS3 can send Dolby HD/DTS-MA as LPCM so you don't even necessarily need a receiver that supports HD audio decoding either to enjoy high def audio from BluRays either.
