We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.

Would've been cooler if it actually wasn't just projected on a screen.
Imagine if that chopper would've been holographically projected in reality! Now THAT would've been cool. (Holodecks รก la Star Trek for instance)
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

If you are reffering to D'Fusion by Total Immersion (link is not working for me), then yes, this shit is amazing. Especialy that video with the car driving around the lot that has real-time enviroment mapping. Blew my mind. Video games could really benefit from this. Imagine the new myst game, kinda backwards in concept to the others, where you play in a 'real-world' with superimposed 3D objects, opposed to the current ones which take place in 'polygon-world' with 'filmed' actors etc. I cant wait to see this technology in person.
How about this;
http://www.mok3.com/index.php
It's software that lets you create photorealistic 3D enviroments from 2D pictures.
The mockup of St. Paul Church made from one photo is especially amazing.

I think the gaming industry will snap his up asap, and the hardware we got today could actually run it!

Yeah, imagine putting on goggles that superimpose a lightsaber into your hand so you can fight in real time with it.
You could actually get exercise while playing computer games!

nah, i've seen Augmented Reality software run on old 800 MHz P3 with a Geforce 2 card.
There is not much special about that, once you know how it works. e.g. the camera needs to be perfectly calibrated and the computer needs to know location and orientation (extrinsic and intrinsic) of the camera, so it can map the 3D objects on the 2D video.
Also the table is probably calibrated by markers, so the computer knows also its location, etc. And when you look at the demonstraters hand, there is a wire coming out from it, meaning he has some kind of pointing device, giving feedback to the computer.
The real trick is to do this w/o calibration and additional input such as markers and pointers, just by extring 3D information from the 2D image, but computers are still far from that. Believe me, I work on this stuff at University.
