I currently have a subscription to Giganews, and up until recently I had a really fast connection to d/l. I have a 20 Mbps download connection through my ISP. But for some reason giganews has gone straight to hell on speed. At one time, I got a better connection when I connected to their european servers, even though I am in the US. But now even their top speed in either US or Europe is somewhere in the 1-2 Mbps range.

What is reasonable to expect speed-wise? And finally is anyone using one that is somewhere in the 15-20 Mbps range?

Thanks alot guys.....

Astraweb ^_^

I've always gotten max speed from them, even on my old 20Mbit cable line. They're cheaper than Giga too, while still offering over 400 days retention.

What about their list of newsgroups? Is it comparable to giganews?

Thanks again...

Astraweb is truly amazing service, 458 days and only $11 a month. Sometimes it seems like too good to be true Smile

I've been using Astra for years and they just keep getting better and better. My wife and I were worried that they started cheap, and offered a lot, just so as to grab the customers from Giga .. and then they'd start ramping prices up -- thankfully this hasn't been the case. $11/mo, no censorship/limitations, full speed and all groups, excellent customer support.

I love Astra ^_^

Another thing regarding the retention. While it is no problem to find files ~160 days, I have a lot of broken downloads if the files are older then ~60-80 days Sad This is what they mean by saying "up to 200" days retention? Sad

If they're claiming "up to 200 days retention" than you SHOULD have no trouble downloading files that old. Since you're having problems getting files older than 80 days, then I'd say their claim was a bit overexaggerated ... though still covered by the "up to" part Sad

I use eweka from the start ever since I began d/l'ing @ newsgroups;

- 449 days retention (seems like it gets higher almost every month though Very Happy)
- max. 8 connections allowed
- free SSL available

I got a 50mbit cable connection (in january/february 2010 it will be upgraded to 80mbit by the ISP Very Happy)
I pay € 7,50 for 30 days in a prepaid way.. and I almost get my full speed thats provided by my ISP @ eweka... mostly around 5.6mb/s L O V E I T! Very Happy
I am very pleased with Eweka,
I made a screenshot to show the download speeds I'm getting;

Intel Core i7 920, Kingston Hyper-X 6GB DDR 3 Triple Channel (3x2 GB), Asus Geforce 275 GTX 896MB

Before time immemorial, there were all kinds of stuff street vendors and even some respectable establishments would sell here (for a fragment of the original's price). Then came the revamped copyright laws and like everybody else I turned to the net. I used to fight off would-be hackers, struggle knee deep in unreliable dial-up connections and hopefully get what I want from newsgroups and IRC channels. I remember the biggest single file I downloaded was around 80 MB during my PTT dial-up days.

Back in 2003, I had a 128kb/s cable when I finally decided to subscribe to Easynews. At first you'd get a mere 10GB/month quota and a max bandwidth of 1mbps (which no one had at the time). Today I have a 8mb(megabits)ps ADSL($66/month) and I can't really say anything about the speed since my connection sucks and I max my speed anyway (750-800 Kb/s download speed). Believe me it is the highest speed an individual get without paying astronomical amounts (say, how about a 200mb(it)/s cable for $1400 a month sound?) or hoping for the fiber optic company to come, tear your streets out. However, I have a friend who works at Micro$oft and he says he's downloading faster than he's able to dump it to a USB drive and I believe him.

I'm currently using the "$29.94 (US) for 150 gigs / month with Rollover and access to 211 days web retention" option. I know it's expensive but you get lightning fast speeds (according to my friend), reliable connections (very few occasions of corrupt downloads), fast responding customer service and the best of it all: The most simple to use web interface along all of the web based usenet providers. Therefor, I recommend it mostly to anyone who never heard of usenet before.

Well, after finally talking with giganews tech support, they recommended that I try their SSL connection. They claim that it masks heavy usage so that your ISP cant follow what you're doing...? Does that make any sense?

Anyway, I tried it, amd BAM - back to 20 MBps d/l's again! I wouldn't have believed it. Sure, I pay another 5$ US per month, but with all of the new games lately I'd have to say its worth it.

Can I have a quick survey of what newsgroup providers everyone is using? This isn't too old of a subject, but still, would prefer something more up to date. I've been having speed problems with Giganews as well, and am looking at other possibilities. Smile

What router you using for that 100/100, and do you have any LAN going on? Because I noticed my router (WRT54GL) is chugging with my 12Mbit connection + watching 720p over the LAN... Probably will have to replace it soon... Sad

i made the switch to supernews after i got fed up with incomplete files on astraweb (not repairable, 80-120d old reports which download just fine with sn)
they are a giganews reseller, capped at 350d retention, ssl, 30 connections for $9.99
can't say how good they are speedwise because i only have my measly 3mbit connection Razz

Something alarming that came to my attention, apparently Giganews has been removing HBO shows. I start downloading a show and every piece is broken.
Just tried NewsHosting, and again same shit... :\
