recently was in spain and our villa had sky satellite with no shortage of NDS commercials, enough to get buying one into my head. wondering if it is worth it, and have a few questions.

1) easy to hack and play downloaded games?
2) DS vs. DS Lite vs. DSi
3) mp3s?
4) movies/tv eps?
5) lots of good games to play (probably mostly puzzle type games, can't fucking stand RPGs)?

thanks Smile

Dude, you can get a PSP and play all psp, playstation, nes, snes, mame, GBA, genesis/megadrive/segaCD, newer arcades, ports like Tyrian, Quake, Doom etc, and have a quadtribillion of homebrew apps to do anything.

You can even easily compile your own C code and run it or even use Luaplayer to run lua scripts on your psp.

There are even early emulators for N64 and the DS itself (there's constant progress but I don't know if these will ever be close to perfect)

And you can play 480x272 h.264 videos and there are some also media players for your music/music vids etc. You can even use the psp to watch youtube ... the list goes on. Also has tvout

Plus, the PSP looks about 6 times cooler than the lame DS.

1. Piece of piss! You seriously wouldn't believe how easy; Buy a flash cart, download ROM, stick ROM on MicroSD card, play on NDS.

2. DSi, if you can afford it, simply because Nintendo are talking about releasing games that are only compatible with the DSi, due to the slightly faster CPU it uses. The original DS is a clunky, ugly, crappy-backlight piece of shit.

3. Yes, there are built-in media players (like Moonshell) for most high-brand flashcarts. I recommend M3-Real (if you get the standard DS-Lite) or Acekard 2i for the DSi model.

4. Urgh.. yes, but would you really want to? A screen less than 4" is most definitely not ideal for movie watching.

5. Hundreds of games, catering to almost every taste ^_^

how easy is it to to hack the PSP 3000? and how long does the battery usually last when playing movies?

about the games, honestly I wouldn't be playing for very long at a time, which is why I thought NDS would be better for puzzle type games (laytons, brainage, scribblenauts etc). are there similar games for PSP? (ie the kind of thing you can pick up for just 15-20 minutes at a time).

oh, and sabin, I watch stuff on my creative zen (2.5" / 320x240) and that is pretty tiny Wink

Well, the PSP has many games, I think you should look into the "minis" games, Lumines etc etc too many to mention Very Happy

At the moment you can't permanently hack the 3000, you use ChickHEN and enable custom firmware which lasts until you power it off (not sleep mode)

When you slide the power "switch" the psp goes in sleep, so you don't need to do it all the time. You can go weeks without hard-rebooting, depends on if it gets stuck (rare) or the battery drains 100%.

Now that I think about it, if an 3000 has firmware above 5.03 then it seems you're screwed for now. Shit.

The only benefit the 2xxx/3xxx has over the 1xxx, is 64MB of RAM as opposed to 32MB -- and a useless TV-out feature that doesn't scale to the screen and requires a HDTV to utilise. The extra RAM is only useful in N64 emulators and the built-in web-browser.

The 2x ones are also able to use skype (use your psp like a phone) and a few other applications. But currently if you're over 5.03 official firmware on a psp 3000 or 2000 with the TA88v3 motherboard, there isn't an exploit out there for your psp. My advice if you're looking to buy one is buy it used. (And not from a shop, etc unless you can verify the firmware/model first.). I bought my phat psp years ago on ebay..been working great ever since:)

None whatsoever, useless device that you'll never need again once you have custom firmware on the machine.

It doesn't matter anyway, as you can swap X and O assignments in the main system settings *and* in the recovery menu you'll get with custom firmware. Basically; Japanese systems use O for all the confirmation commands, and X for all the cancel ones -- PAL/NTSC systems do it different, with X for confirmation and O for cancel .. but that's moot anyway as you can change the defaults yourself.

That looks fine ! But what maiinboard does it have ? If it's v3 then it's not permanently hackable.

What firmware is it on ? Maybe it's already at custom ? And does the LCD screen have any stuck pixels ?

it is firmware 5.03 ... don't think the seller will have time to respond to the question about the mb though...

The only games I've actually enjoyed on my DS are New Super Mario Bros, Zelda, and GTA. The ninja gaiden game is pretty good, i haven't spent enough time with it yet though. Just finished GTA last week.

Ideally, if the price is right, you'd want a 2001. Better d-pad, for the most part (though preowned PSPs would probably have worn that out anyway), more RAM, TV-out and other little Slim-only apps. There's nothing wrong with the 1001, but it doesn't hurt to have the later model. Just make sure it's either already got CFW, or can easily be flashed to CFW.

Get the slim. No, sreioulsy, I mean it. Get the slim (2000)

Sabin has a phat and is used to one, but I'm telling you, it's twice the weight, I have phat+slim in front of me right now ...

And the psp has lcd screen and sometimes there are stuck/burnt pixels, so be careful. (My psp had a pixel stuck 2 days after I bought it, and after a year it got unstuck somehow !!)

Actually, it's 33% heavier.. not 100% Razz But yes, as I said; ideally you want the 2001 model - the slim.
