no need for menus etc, i just want to recode it and be able to play it on a standard DVD-R with the srt file i have as subtitle included.
Could someone spoonfeed me the programs and more importantly the settings i need to get this done? thanks

AVI2DVD seems to be able to do this, but haven't tested quality-wise. If you are looking for quality tools and guides (as oppose to one-click tools), head to Doom9 and VideoHelp, there are many great guides on how to do everything.

Don't try AVI2DVD. Very poorly written piece of shit.
I see some recommendations for:
