Seems like we won't see any Deus Ex 2. Mad Mad Mad . Very sad news indeed.

Quote:

Joystiq has learned that Ion Storm, the developer of the Thief and Deus Ex series, may be closing its doors. Warren Spector, the company’s lead man, left the house back in November, but the fate of the team there has been up in the air. If true, it will be a great loss to the gaming community. Deus Ex 2 wasn’t the hit they were hoping it would be, but the quality of their titles has been exceptional from the beginning. We’ll keep you posted, as details emerge.

Damn...

It's shit like this that makes me feel bad to warez...

They were really a great studio... I personally loved the last 2 games (sure, they were buggy as hell, but they had better graphics than most games of the time, and the gameplay was great).

This is really a sad day. I'd honestly rather see a serial whore like Digital Extremes shut down than these guys... at least they were trying to do something other than just improve gfx in games and decrease the amount of intelligence required to play.

It's a fact that the successor to Deus Ex was console crap.

Console crap does not sell.

It is likely that since the console crap did not sell, Ion storm will close down.

And it is a probable reason for Warren Spector leaving a sinking ship, despite being part of the reason it sank.

"console crap" or not, DXIW was one of the better games I had played in a long time, and it had gfx that were WAY above those in other games of the time. This was the time when the PC's GFX capabilities were still =< XBOX. I don't know what you mean by "console crap", but besides the bugs and a few strictly "console" features, like HUD design, which I found innovative, this game should have been GOTY... I enjoyed it far more than I did, say, Unreal II.

This is a shame.
Deus Ex and Thief 3 are really good games, and it's a pitty the developers might close down

Too bad.
I sure hope Eidos will prevent this eventually.
It doesn't matter how DE:IW came out in the end, cause everyone here can tell this firm had a lot of potential to make future quality titles.

are we talking about the same game? DXIW was quality wise a huge step down from Deus Ex One. The gfx was mediocre, the levels tiny, which meant a lot of loooong loading screens. It had only a smal percentage of the freedom the first DX had. And seriously, the time when XBOX => PC was long gone gefore that. If your looking for a game with GOTY quality, you should have taken a look at Gothic 2.

I thought the graphics were excellent if you had a machine capable of running them at full. But the constant loading totally ruined it, especially how small the areas were. Thats because of the xbox's lack of RAM.

They also dumbed down the game a whole lot of make is more accessible to console gamers.

I really liked the first Deus Ex, even if i didn't play that much, but i heard so many bad things about the 2nd that i didn't bother.

I'd like to give my two cents on the issue.
Deus Ex was and still is quite simply one of the best games to grace the PC. Granted, it had its flaws (some quirky AI), but in the end the overall feel it imparted on the player (the "experience" if you will), for me at least, was something no game has come close to in recent years.
What they did to Deus Ex 2 was a fucking travesty. They paraded the title around like a two dollar whore for all, and it was pretty much destroyed by doing so. Universal Ammo, Console Loading Zones, shallow character development, and no "feel" whatsoever (I loved the setting and premise of the original).
Don't get me wrong, I understand how those who never played the original can see the sequel as a good title, but when taking the original into account, its pretty much a fucking leap backwards.

Now , to my point....
Ion Storm (under Eidos' thumb), followed the beckons for a multiplatform release. Instead of fighting to preserve what made the original great, they said fuck it, and developed the sequel with the mass market in mind. They went from being a respectable developer to a publishers whore in the span of one title.

Its sad to see them go, but they had it coming.
Turn your back on your fans and your chief title, all in the name of appeasing the suits and raking in the cash, and this is what you get.
It is unfortunate that a lot of good talent will be going with them, whereas the chief motherfuckers to blame for this whole mess don't suffer at all (how like life eh?), but its the way things happen.
Hopefully (although doubtful) their downfall will at least impart some sense of loyalty to other developers commiting the same mistake.

In what way did they destroy Thief 3 ? The areas were just as big (well ok, same size) as games like HL2, the controlls were great but they needed some tweaking (took -10 seconds to do). Thief1-2 are very linear in comparison and arent half as good imho.

Are you serious? One of Thief 3's well publicised features was it's third person view.

Haha, the first two thief games were massively superior. Especially in the atmosphere department.

Oh wait, you're the guy who said Doom 3 looks like shit. That explains it.
