So, my brother's from another mother, brother.
Eeh. What?
Let's start that again:
My brother's xbox360 RROD'ed couple weeks ago he sent his box to a shop to get it fixed, came back with more problems yada yada.
Now he's got a new drive with the IXtreme 1.6 firmware (don't know yet what drive he has)
and some of his old burnt games give him trouble - they just won't run. My first thought was that it might be because the Wave3 -> Wave 2 patch was applied to them but apparently there are some that won't run that were released way before Wave 3 became an issue.
Any tips on what could cause that and how to fix it?

One cause that might be a problem is running games that aren't properly stealth patched.

Do the troubled games work in another 360..? If so it could be the laser of the drive.

I suppose it's because they aren't stealth patched properly because my box (running the 1.4 firware) runs them just fine.
And he's already got a new drive.
Is there any easy way to downgrade his firmware back to 1.4 (or any other firmware that doesn't bitch around as much) he doesn't give a damn about xbox live.

btw. who's that in your avatar? looks familiar...

Stealth patch has nothing to do if you can run a game or not.

By all means voice your opinion and help the man out.

Actually as far as I know it does have something to do with it. Get the activate.iso that is supplied with the 1.6 firmware, burn it to a dual layer and insert it, afterwards try starting the game again. The activate.iso disables any security checks for the next boot, so if your game starts fine then you know it was security checks causing the problem.

Yeah but stealth patches are only used for faking your modded 360 to appear untouched when going online.

Well, thanks so far, but apparently this problem runs a bit deeper than I expected.
So here goes a bit of the backstory:
His xbox RROD'ed so he got it fixed. He got his console back but somehow almost all games he tried just froze after about 20-60 minutes.
He sent it back and bla bla bla after some back and forth he got a new drive, flashed with the 1.6 firmware.
That's where this thread started because most games wouldn't run anymore.
Now, I told him to try the activate.iso so he downloaded it, burnt it tried a game, it started... and froze after about 20 minutes.
And now he can every so often get a game to run with a activate.iso but they always freeze.
To me this sounds more like a hardware failure than anything else.
You people got any thoughts on this?
I (and my brother) am really thankful for your help on this Smile

There's one thing I'd like to try, I mean if it's hardware related he's kinda fucked anyway, is to downgrade the firmware, if possible.
Any clues on if and how that's doable?

I think you can, but you need to flash to the original firmware first.
Try http://www.xboxscene.com/

But he got it done from a guy who does that on a regular basis so (while possible) I think that's rather unlikely. And I don't wanna go accuse the guy when it still could be something else. :/
