Anyways we probably won't see a leak because the activation method is like Bioshock, meaning it has to download some binaries before it can be used, and the servers for that won't turn on until release Sad

Gearbox said on the official forums if someone managed to get the game early and legitimately, they would seek to have the activation date rolled back for whatever that is worth.

Now what would be the point of that?

"If the game leaks early, we'll remove the protection that's supposed to prevent people playing before release"

That shit right there is right off the hurrdurr scale.

For legit purchases. Not cracked ones. If people connect and try to activate the game legally (ie access the authorisation servers with valid keys) they will remove it. It's not the same as pirating the game. If you bypass the protection, the date check should stop you from playing. If you try to activate normally, it wont. At least that's their intention...

Just in case you don't know, pirated copies of games usually come from retail, so the idea of this protection is to remove any chance of leaking the game early and have pirates release it, this is achieved by usually having critical parts of the game either requiring some patching or decryption.

In this case if a release group were to activate this game early, they would get the missing parts to play the game, and they would simply use those missing parts to crack the rest of the protection(Which isn't that hard anymore), and since they got the missing parts from Gearbox, they can include that in the crack, and the game will work for pirates even if they pull down the activation server again.

So what they're are saying is that they went out and wasted money on a copy protection which's sole purpose is to prevent players and pirates alike to play before release, and they're saying they're willing to disable the copy protection iif a few players buy the game early, thus making it piratable?

I don't think so.

Only point they said was, basically they hated to think of their real customers getting screwed over if they were lucky enough to get the game early legitimately.
I am sure their publisher wouldn't allow it anyway since they decide the copy protection and not Gearbox (which they have also stated repeatedly).

The game is certainly worth supporting though.

I know a few Australian stores have the PC version for sale already.

Epsilon: Game is great btw, I love it, so far it's a definite goty. It's remarkable how much has changed since the beta, stardock have been working their asses off, and it shows.

It's strange that there weren't any reviews in the weeks before it was released - I think just a review in the official xbox magazine. Guess the publisher was relying on pure hype to sell the game. It's funny to see the console kiddies in the official forum ranting and screaming whenever the game gets a review score of just an 8 or 8.5.

Not to mention..

the lighting, textures, and color saturation looked dramatically better than the Xbox game sitting right next to it. Seriously, I'm not just saying that; the difference in visual fidelity was profound to me

from the atomicgamer review..
"the only thing I can think of that's missing over the console editions is split-screen action (which PC gamers generally don't care for anyway)" Shocked

why does everyone think pc gamers don't care for splitscreen? not only console gamers have friends over Sad

meh, gaming laptops aren't that common for this to be a bottom priority. especially considering they use the same engine for all platforms, so the split screen code should already be in there

Because for the most part; they really don't. At least, that's always what I've seen. Local multiplayer, outside of fighting games, tends to work better on different machines anyway.

The code was still there in L4D, albeit disabled and needing a hack to reenable, so perhaps it might be the same this way?

It didn't even need a hack, you just put two console commands and set up an easy gamepad controller cfg file. Very Happy I agree, they should let the code stay in there. But I guess they'd want people to buy as many copies as possible rather than just buying one for two people. Razz
