well you could just deny those new registries to get access to the game section for a month or so
and open up a new section for new released games
so all the shit is posted there and the ones who like that can read it and the ones who don't just ignore it

Yeah but then people would just not return. Could you imagine, having to wait a month in order to post? I certainly couldn't, I'd just lose interest.

I still think that this is the best option:

Rinze said it was under consideration that he'll see what he could do, but nothing happened.

I initially voted yes, but to be honest - I don't really have a say, or an opinion. I'm not one of the "older crowd" who have been here for years and lived through events such as the Doom 3 release (lol..) so I really don't have much say. The points made in this thread have been enough to make me reconsider closing registrations .. sure we get some assholes, but that's what the ban button is for right?

Same as sabin (+/-)
Well , 5 year here , maybe more , only 13xx msg due to my native language (learn english only 2 year @ 13yold (30now), i would to be more active , but language stop me many time Sad

hmm very technical solution
you realise in some sections of this forum topics deliberate get of-topic just for the fun of it
could be people are trying to make fun of someone in a friendly matter etc
and to quote inz
Quote:
48hr delay is already implemented, has been for who knows how long... And prompts are pretty useless, if someone wants to spam or troll that won't stop them.

so just my opinion but separating the traffic seems easiest:
a forum for established games
a forum for games in dev.
a forum for games newly released

Nooo you know what this will make? At least 3 topics in each for the same game with people not realizing what goes where. Laughing

took the words right out of my mouth.

It's bad enough everyone uses a game thread as tech support as it is when the tech section is 4mm south.

@iNathan: my guess if it is listed as such only a spammer/troller will place it deliberately in the wrong section those can be banned

No not really, a lot of people just don't have time to deal with it. Even now with one thread of PC Games, you see same topics come out every week in new threads without people searching (especially the mp games without keys topic). So imagine what will happen now. People won't search, will make a new thread about a game in the wrong section (or make new one after release when there is a 98 pages long thread in the pre-release section). Very problematic. Smile

i did make a few assumptions btw:
when a new hot release is coming up many find there way to this forum
majority of those are not spammers/trollers
they just want to get latest info

if you make sure that it is real obvious where to post about what
the majority will place it in the right section
then again i only dealt with game fora with 100-400 subscriptions so i might be wrong

about duplicate posts: http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56573
any which way this forum is a soap opera

about redundancy: when a game proves to be worthwhile you can move the post chains to the established section and leave a moved link in old section

I strongly disagree with closing registrations for a number of reasons.
The most important:
1. Most new users behave properly.
2. New users keep the site interesting.
3. Most problems aren't caused by new members.

Some numbers to back up claims 1 & 3:
Between 16 and 2 days ago 256 people registered (and confirmed their email) for this site.
135 of them have used the forum (at least viewed it while logged in).
20 have made at least one post.
5 of them have been permanently banned. (1 for requesting, 1 for posting in non-english and posting warez sites, 2 were dupes of cnZ and 1 was a dupe of ginge51, so of the 17 truly new and active people only 2 messed up badly in their first posts, 2 others made not very good posts but not bad enough to get banned or warned, the other 13 of the 17 new ones made only useful/meaningful posts and are an asset to this forum. None got a temporary ban.

In the same time 11 other permanent bans were placed. 6 were duplicate accounts of previously banned people. The others were registered between 1 month and 4 years, had dozens to hundreds of posts and should have been well aware of the rules. Also all the temporary bans (several dozen) were for people who have been registered here for ages (only 3 of them registered in the last half year).

Newly registered people tend to get permanently banned if they make grievous errors (requesting, trolling) in their first few posts, older registrations get treated more leniently, if the trolling and argueing and soap opera like behaviour in the games sections is to stop maybe that has to change.

Those are some interesting stats Rinze.

I also agree that closing registration would be ridiculous. I agree with Fisk actually in that what we kind of need is something that will attract more users to come in and be productive members of this community.

Unfortunately it seems like this forum has always attracted those either looking for warez or those looking for help getting their warez to work correctly. I think that's just the nature of a forum on an NFO site. Luckily we have had some good members stick around.

That being said, I'm not sure how we would bring in new, quality members but I think the wrong way to go about it is closing registration regardless of what kind of headaches are going to be caused by high profile game releases.

Personally, I think some of the things that are done by our members aren't very accessible. Such as the templates for some games. Some of those come with screenshots, links to interviews, etc. - by linking to these pages via the front-page (and maybe even adding a thumbnail next to the game with a small bit of the game frontpage) would make things easier, and invite more people to participate.

Furthermore I think this could be done to tv-series, movies, etc. - a way of doing it is letting our members add to the content of the main page, and the overall quality of the site (eg. submit thumbnail on a post on the forums, and the users linking to a release on front page). Adding a bit of colour to the front-page (via thumbs) and just generally making it easier to go to a thread about a game would be pretty cool.

You might limit this feature to the users that frequently post templates.

Additionally nforce could have screenshot galleries for releases. Like 'upload screenshot' linked to a release (think vcdquality and movie/series screenshots). And also user ratings (instead of having a big thread with movie/game/etc. reviews each post on the frontpage has a 1-10 (rounded) score. That's also a good way to see what releases are crap, and which ones are good etc.

Generally, I think elements such as these would make nforce stand out more and attract more users, while still maintaining a 'legit' conduct (no links, downloads, etc.).

I also think fisk should be unbanned.

http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37095&start=1800

this...this is why I asked for a temp close. So many new retards who can't figure out how to push 1 button is clogging that thread up like hell.

80% of that shit is tech page related, why is it being posted in the game section? Simply because they sign up don't READ ANYTHING and immediately start clogging shit up. I'm not going to sit here and sort through 17 pages of useless shit just to find 1 answer nor am I going to sit here and keep hitting the report button.

You mods need to either LOOK through the threads and stop waiting for someone to hit the report button or just close the damn thing.

This is why I don't fucking post in there anymore, god forbid your able to have a decent conversation without searching through "it haz physx?!? WHICH RELEZ DO I DL HAR HAR!

Well first, the mods should have warned the users who started offtopicing, if that persisted deleted and temp banned the fools. But then again, if I was a mod here I wouldn't even think of going into games section Very Happy. There are too much retards who can't read the rules/post in the wrong section/neglect the new cool search rinze put in a thread...
