Most gamers in germany are importing their games anyway. There's less money made in germany with games than you think.

Good point. Not sure if anyone's seen the movie about that porn guy who made Hustler, can't remember his name, with Woody Harrelsson starring as him. He makes the same point. America in the 70's thought sex was obscene but extreme violence OK. I certainly don't agree with that.

yes in germany if a game is marked "above 18" you have to show your id or passport somthing showing your age to buy sometimes.. or if you look young ... same with movies.
but tv is becoming better^^... i saw once a real hardcore scene in" free"(fu the gez") television late in the evening... not long ago... 20 years ago the guy responsible for it would loose his job or even bader

Both occurences were meant to keep "dangerous" media from the people.
Blaming videogames as the sole reason is stupid beyond anything.
Just take a look at the name "Killergames" that our nice politicians have given to, well, most FPSs that is.
It's time they realise that censorship never helped anybody. But censoring is the only thing they can think of.
What does that say about politicans when the only thing they can imagine to solve a problem is banning something?

It's possible those parents just use it as a coping mechanism but, seriously? Every objective spectator to this must see that it's just wrong in every aspect. |
If those parents were doing well the job of being parents, that event would not happen. They are simply looking for a scapegoat not to blame themselfs. But they know, yes they know deep in their hearts who is guilty.

Funny thing: I've seen swearing and nudity on American broadcast TV (PBS), but I don't think I've ever seen (outside of news reports or documentaries) any really extreme violence (blood, guts everywhere, etc). And if you're counting the kind of lol violence in shows like Heroes... well, I won't even go there. Given, I don't watch trash like CSI, but even then I would imagine it would be more the aftermath of violence, rather than violence actually being shown. Get HBO or something though, and you'll find a lot of all three.
Additionally, there's a big difference between the insane fear in America that children will turn on their TVs and see "zomg bad things" that drives the FCC to prevent nudity/swearing on TV, and the insane behavior of those in Germany/Australia/etc. that wish to absolutely ban the sale/use of such entertainment.
All of that said, it's not surprising that Americans are more afraid of sex than violence (I don't think they're more upset by "bad language" though. That's just in your head.): Simply, America was colonized by a bunch of religious zealots, and a huge amount of the current population is still religious zealots. I think I saw a statistic recently that said only 55% of Americans believe in evolution  . Simply, the belief system of the average American finds violence far more acceptable than sex.
Long story short though... censorship can eat a diseased dick, and pro-censorship groups (especially "concerned parents" groups) can eat a big, juicy diseased dick.
