Hello,
I was told that having encryption on a wireless router takes up bandwidth but Linksys tech support insists that it does not. Is Linksys right on this matter?

Yes they are. If you're talking about internet bandiwdth anyway, as the data being sent out from the router to the internet will not be encrypted.

What about the encrypted data from the router to the wireless PC?

If the connection between the WAP (router) and WiFi devices is encrypted, it takes a toll on the wireless bandwidth. It's a non-issue problem if you only the wireless network for internet surfing, because internet speeds rarely reach the speeds of the WiFi capabilities, but if you test raw bandwidth between two devices on the same wireless network, encrypted transmission does take a small toll on the bandwidth and CPU power (for decoding). But is having a non-encrypted network really an option? I don't think so, and the toll is negligible.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate all this. Can you please tell me what you mean by "raw bandwidth"? I am using my wireless PCs to play games on the LAN and the games get choppy while playing.

By "raw bandwidth" I mean taking the network to a lab, and using the best possible equipment to test the router's performance. With encryption, it will be slightly slower, but that really really minor. I really don't believe it's the encryption that is causing the game problems. Could you please provide more details on what the network is (801.2 B/G/N)? Also what mode is supported on the PCs? But even in B, which is the slowest, games should have no problem.

I have Linksys WRT54G router and three WMP54G wireless adapters. Also one wired PC.

WRT54G is B and G, as far as I know. I'm guessing WMP54G as well. G allows up to 54Mbit/s, which is more than enough for gaming.

Thank you for all the information. I will try and see what can possibly be causing the slow downs.

Can you provide some information on what exactly the slow-downs are exactly. Also, what the game is?

I am not playing anything that requires alot of processing power. I play ZSNES ROMS. While playing it stalls for few seconds then continues. This happens intermittently.

What encryption type did you use?

Make sure in your router settings you've got it set to use "G" only. The wireless speeds will default to the lowest "common" speed..so if you have a B device connecting to the network, all your speeds will be slowed to B speed. Not a problem if you're just gaming over the internet, as the bandwidth for B is usually faster than "most" internet connections. If you're doing over a LAN, it could be a problem. (I think the linksys is setup from the factory to use "B/G" mode. Although i have to say, if you're just playing NES games over the network, I don't see them taking up that much bandwidth..even in B mode. I would suspect it's the emulator more than your network that's causing a problem..

AES TKIP tried both... long passwords, short passwords, different channels... after some time downloading the router suddently wouldn't respond anymore and I had to restart it. Still happens now and then even without encryption and just mac adress filtering, but not nearly as often as with wpa.

I think it's time to change a router. Unencrypted transmission means anyone with a sniffer can just come into range of the network and enjoy all the data you transmit (like passwords, authentication, etc).
