The IT industry as a whole is starting to cut their workforces:

- EA 10%
- THQ 25%
- Free Radical Fires 75% of Staff
- AMD 9% (as well as salary cuts)
- Factor 5 Axes 50%
- 70% of Funcom US workforce
- etc

In the midst of this, Stardock is opening a second studio.

Helped in part by generous Michigan tax breaks, developer/publisher Stardock (Sins of a Solar Empire, Demigod) is planning a $900,000 expansion of its headquarters to accomodate development of a new PC roleplaying game.

The expansion will create some 53 jobs, pushing the company's workforce to well over 100 employees--an impressive number for the once-modest Plymouth, Michigan based studio.

"I think it has more to do with the fact that Stardock keeps their overhead costs very low. They spent less than $500,000 on Sins of a Solar Empire. Even 100K copies sold would have meant massive profits for them.

They also don't spend much on marketing, only catering to their core audience through ads in magazines like PC Gamer or PC Zone.

Their DRM stance doesn't hurt them because they aren't some massive corporation that spends $15million on every game. That is where it gets risky for companies like EA. They are spending $15 million dollars on their major projects(sure there are some that don't even approach that, but the big titles like Spore, Crysis, Dragon Age, Far Cry 2, and a few others are all sitting at around $15-20 million to develop), which means that unless it goes platinum, they won't be breaking even.

As a smaller company with lower overheads, their DRM stance works better for them.

There is a lot of thought that goes in to DRM policies, and although Stardock is very much an idealistic company, there is never just one right solution.

You can insist that DRM serves no purpose, but it is better safe than sorry for companies like EA who answer to investors every day... If a game sold poorly on PC and had no DRM, EA and Ubisoft would have investors so far up their @ss that they wouldn't be able to move. Privately owned and publicly traded companies face two VERY DIFFERENT situations.

Stardock can afford to be idealistic. Nobody is crawling up their @ss wondering how they are protecting their investments..." "

I don't understand what your expecting for an answer. i thought it was pretty plain.

The big companies have DRM to protect their games because investors would be crawling up their ass cracks.

Smaller companies with no drm... it doesn't have to sell as many copies to be successful because the cost to make it isn't as high. If it does fail, then they are out of profit just like a bigger company would be.

Slowly but surely I think companies are starting to see a lot of these DRM schemes do nothing to protect them.
