Demo on the works confirmed for next week on Pyranha Bytes forums. I can't wait!
Just watched the making off video. Michael, the lead designer, said the old Ultima titles was their chief example for developing Risen. Ultima is the best RPG series ever IMO.
DaggerXL: A The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall Engine Remake

Eh?
The first two are quite possibly amongst the greatest crpg's since the turn of the millenium.

I had nothing but trouble with them epsilon,,
Bad frame rates and jerky action.. tried to get it settled but to no avail.,,
I remember playing the first one and that played out ok back on my nvidia card days, but I found it really repetitive more so than other rpgs and wooden feel to the action...
Greatest or not, anything that was after the first, just didnt sit well with my pc or feel of gaming needs..
The first two games have a more involving control scheme, especially the first Gothic title but once you get the hang of it it's a good game, pretty difficult and punishing at first though (Both of them, especially in G2 with the expansion for start characters.) but with a bit of work you can depopulate the various monsters and other things quite effectively.
(Things respawn after every act however and with more powerful things replacing lower-end monsters.)
It's also possible to get stuck and totally fuck up by acting like a idiot so you have to be careful about what choices you make.
(Pissing of Gomez in Gothic 1 for example.)
I've no idea how Risen will be but Gothic 3 was quite easy and forgiving compared to the previous titles, still you had to think about what you did or you'd mess up the storyline or get locked out of certain things, realistic but difficult if you don't know what path to take.
(Technical issues also hampered it a bit and some design choices with things like game balance but the community patch - next/last version should be out soon it seems - helped quite a bit.)
Looking forward to this title then Arcania, Dragonage, Witcher 2, Mass Effect 2, Two Worlds 2 and many other titles late this year and 2010, RPG games seem to grow quite well although a bit different compared to early hardcore titles.
(More action now but there's still some solid games, even hack & slash titles and sandbox games can be fun, although I'm more into story but I liked Fallout 3 / Oblivion due to moddability and the freedom it gave you.)
Let's hope it'll be as good as G2+ Night of Raven. Fingers crossed. Demo will probably shine some light on the issue, so i can't wait to get hold of it .

That's a pretty tall order... Hehe tho I' love to see the same amount of difficulty in Risen - if only to hear the whining of the people who haven't played Gothic games before.
the weak points he mentions is that it takes a while to get into and that it has some poor character models (which we already know from looking at screenshots )
About the Gothic games, the first Gothic was the best imo (might be because G2 felt more of the same). At first the controlls felt ankward, i can understand that many people that downloaded it and didnt really give it a chance didnt like it, it takes a while to get into. The combat was great imo, takes a while before you can do all the moves, so the first hand impression people get with the combat isnt how it really is in the end.
Edit:

Better reviews than Gothic 2 so far (usually in the 8.0 - 8.2 range)
Being on console can only be good for this developer. At least they'll have to get most of the game-breaking bugs and shitastic gameplay elements fixed. The UI may actually be tolerable for once too!
LOL at that video.. took nearly a minute to load the intro.
Performance seems ok, not sure on what machine they're running it though. Graphics are nothing flashy, animations and character models look rather bad, actually. Also, one of the guys speaking in the video talks about how the difficulty was, near the end, which seems to suggest that it's not really too long of a game. The world isn't too big either, supposedly. Perhaps it's for the better though, after G3.
Overall it looks ok and quite satisfying.
As a side note, it's funny that the first character You meet is a woman. And one with a name! So un-gothic.
