Seriously, am I the only one that plays almost only with mages/sorcerers? Why do the spells effects suck monkey balls in 99% of the games?

Anyways, I really liked NWN 1 &2 , Diablo and Baldur's Gate spell effects and the spells itself. I'm looking for something that makes your e-penor grow to 1 kilometer when you cast The Ultimate Death Spell on a bunch of goblins, know what I mean?

Feel free to recommend me something...

BTW, is Gothic's 3 magic any good?

Well, if you want the feeling of awesome powah, you could try the 2 KOTOR games. It's not magic, it's the Force, but you know ... pretty close, lol. It's very powerful to command others to jump to their death in conversations and choke them in battle !

You can do some ultra-powerful gangsta shit as you level up. Fear the Force, biatches.

Also, there's some cool magic and alchemy in The Witcher, but swordfighting is what you do most of the time. It's worth it, though.

You should also check out some vids of Avencast, looks pretty impressive, although it's kinda old. Anyway, nothing will top Baldur's Gate 2 in ultimate magic battles/showdowns !

We'll see about Dragon Age, too, hehe.

Tried The Witcher, a great game, an excellent one in fact- but it has only 5 spells...

KOTOR 2- oh, I tried this game. I really did. It just put me off that you spend like an HOUR on the damn spaceship, in fact it put me off so much that I didn't play it further. Laughing Does it get any better afterwards?

And Dragon Age is on my radar for quite a while, though it seems to be going OMG I'M A GORE KNIGHT I KILL PPLZ LOLZ kind of way. The spells I've seen in gameplay trailers are OK, but... even Diablo 3 has better spells than this.

As far as I can remember Planscape Torment had the coolest spells ever, I remember that hammer from the sky.

Oh, yes Planescape Torment is also uber-awesome.

Anyway, KOTOR 2 is a true Bioware epic. An unparalleled Star Wars experience.

So fucking true. I remember my battle with Irenicus, as a max (before expansion) level mage, spell for spell. That was simply epic. There was a counter for everything, and almost every spell had its place. Nothing came even close afterwards, all NWN games seemed just shallow and lacked that "oooh fuck" feeling when the world suddenly turned gray during a time stop...

Playing a caster is real fun in RPG's (if they're done right - good spells and you can be a pure caster etc.), I always make one, if not in the first run, in the later playthroughs at least.

Garus: Did you get all the spells in Gothic 3? If you go all the way with it and get the best spells, magic rapes everything - normal ranged or melee isn't even in the same category of pwnage. You can just AoE all the massive enemy groups to hell and take zero damage while doing it.

Whereas melee & ranged of course have to kill pretty much one at a time... Definitely give it a try Neon, just remember to get the latest community patch.

Edit: Oh yeah, then of course there's Oblivion (WITH the magic mods, they're mandatory!). I haven't played OB in over 2 years now so I wouldn't know what exactly to recommend these days, but even back when I was playing the magic mods that were available then vastly improved the caster experience.

No doubt there's lots of threads dedicated just for magic mods at the Bethesda forums you could browse.

Except that KOTOR 2 wasn't made by Bioware.

These games are all worth playing, eventhough the graphics are dated.
Except for Eschalon it's from 2007 so it looks "newer"
They all feature 'powerful' magic systems.

Lands of Lore
Lands of Lore II
Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance
Eschalon: Book 1
Anvil of Dawn
Wizardry 8
Might and Magic 4 through 7
Dungeon Hack
Dungeon Master 1 + 2

And another game I can't remember the name of, magic there was really powerful. It was developed by a finnish game studio, the magic system there was revolutionary in that there was just as much chance of you being harmed by your spell as your opponent being obliterated. Dammit, why can't I remember the name Razz

I loved Planescape Torment, forgot to mention it. Smile

I also tried Oblivion, but it was.... meh. I mean- the spell effects were pretty good, but it had probably the most disappointing fireballs in the history of gaming.

Sacred 2... wanted to play that for a long time. Are the patches regularly cracked or do we have to stick with something older?

Two Worlds- I hated that game, seriously.

Played Titan Quest, I admit the game plays really nice, BUT the amount of enemies in later stages is so ridiculous that it turned me off.

@Epsilon- I loved Lands of Lore, one of my favorite games. I also played Might and Magic and Wizardry, but couldn't get into it.

And yes, the fight with Irenicus was EPIC. Especially if you had that robe that sped up your casting time to 300%

Ah, the Time Stop spell... Crying or Very sad

I wish there was a way to make a game with a system like in Mage: the Ascension (or more recent: The Awakening), pnp world of darkness RPG systems. Honestly, when it comes to magic, nothing will ever beat a system where you can design your own "spells" on the spot, simply shaping reality with your will Smile .That really feels godlike, almost nothing is out of reach for an experienced mage, if he dares, and doesn't fear being pummeled by paradox...

Surprised nobody has mentioned the final fantasy games, they had some of the most visually epic and satisfying spells I have ever seen in any RPG's especially with the creatures you can summon.

Nice particle effects and flying ragdolls. But does that make you feel power, or just monotony after a while.

Personally I liked Morrowind more for spell creation. There were many more options for enchanting items plus there was the levitation ability in Morrowind that was taken out of Oblivion for some reason.

I remember having an enchanted shield that would cast levitation for like 300 seconds and let you move pretty quick. Was fun Very Happy

It's terrible, don't even bother trying it.

With mods? Like I said, vanilla Oblivion had terrible spells, they lacked oomph to begin with and in later levels they barely tickled even the wimpiest enemies, making a pure caster character pretty much impossible. Check some youtube vids or something about the spell mods, it's like playing another game with the new spell gfx and overall power.

@Alastes:

Hehe yeah, MW had some more possibilities with enchanting & spells. As well as exploits of course, you could get some hilarious effects with the infamous alchemy trick. Just for lulz I once stacked my speed to beyond godly levels, and in one step my character literally moved from the south tip of Vvardenfell to near Solstheim. Good times Laughing

Currently I'm trying this
It's fun to play a game with a random world and a very powerful magic system where you get to design your own spells.
But then again you can do the same thing in Dominion 3, which theres a lets play of in the lets play section.

Morrowind had a great magic system, the only drawback was the fact that after you gained a high enough level, using magic offensively was almost just as dangerous to you, as it was to your enemies. All those constant reflect effects. Brrr.

Levitation was uber cool though, and so was jumping, and attribute changing. I had a vampire mage with a cursed robe (from bloodmoon) that could get as much as 8 or 9k of mana (by casting short time buffs), and he had a damage dealing spell that required like a thousand of it. Could wipe out whole Almalexia's room ( everyone who played tribunal will know ;P ) , along with myself, because a reflect there was almost inevitable. I also made a fast travel spell , the same way, which boosted my jumping so much that it was possible to simply jump above more then half of the isle. It required a quick levitation at the end though Razz . Damn, that was a game. Oblivion seems so... simple, when i recall all the hours spent on Morrowind, absolutely glued to the screen.

It was quite buggy and demanding at release so by the time they fixed it and people upgraded their rigs, interest was lost.. decent game otherwise..

Agreed. I remember it kicking the crap out of my machine when it first came out (Opteron 165@3Ghz and a pair of 7900GTXs in SLi) - but persevering through the performance issues and it turned out to be a pretty damned good game. Pure hack'n'slash with tons of loot, great spells, loads of quests - and the fact that the world alters itself depending on whether you take the path of Nature or Technology.

In fact, I'm going to reinstall it. I loved that game!
