Such an improvement over DiRT1 in all areas, loving the variation in races, graphics are top notch, handling/physics are very good.
Just reached lvl 11.

Wheel is useless in these games. I wouldn't waste your money unless you are buying a proper wheel for GT/FORZA/ and the PC.
Quote: | it doesn't matter which kind of input you use |
A wheel will help you immensely in a simulator once you've gotten used to it, but in these types of games (GRiD, DiRT, etc) it actually works against you because of the way the steering model is designed around control pads. Everything being equal your friend would still be faster because he's probably better than you (or practices more), not because the type of input doesn't matter.
In Gran Turismo the fastest times, if we ignore cheaters, are set by people with all the driving aids off using steering wheel setups. Trying to achieve those on a gamepad would be pointless and painful. With GRiD and DiRT the opposite is true. Sure it works, but there's no point unless you're comfortable with that handicap and enjoy the experience (which is fair enough). Personally I'm happy to just sit back and use the analogue sticks, it's more relaxing, more fun... which is what these games are supposed to be I thought.

of course a wheel is a big help when playing sims, the "it doesn't matter which kind of input you use" was aimed at games like dirt. i was just saying that in arcade-like racing games, you'll post the best times with the kind of input you're most comfortable with, not with the one that the game is meant to be played with.

iv heard its worth it over time in games like Forza 2 and Race. But there are few good racing sims on the 360.
In dirt 1 I just find it way to sensitive. Gonna check out Dirt 2 now^^

The wheel itself has absolutely nothing to do with lap times. It's the throttle and brake pedal's allowing for minute inputs/corrections during braking/corner exit. I can carve lines as smooth as a steering wheel with any controllers but it gets difficult modulating throttle/brake with the rather non linear triggers.
I've actually found the wheel to make things more difficult because of how much more movement/involvement is required. It's all in the feet.

In some games you can't really regulate the throttle it seems like...

Not true, the wheel plays a large part, your last paragraph highlights just one of the reasons why. Playing GRiD/DiRT with a wheel you will be making large, repetitive and unrealistic movements with the wheel to compete with the arcade steering model that on a control pad takes just a minor flick to accomplish.
In games like GT (which isn't even a pure simulation) the steering wheel allows for much finer control, and without it you'll struggle (indeed, find it nigh on impossible without driving aids) to keep the car stable through high speed corners. I'd actually argue that for most console games the pedals are not that big of a factor at all as you can be as aggressive as you like without tyre/brake wear, having to worry about downshifting too soon, and so on.... I mean, FORZA might be different in that respect so you'll have to correct me if I'm wrong.
...but still, all of this means nothing as far as DiRT is concerned, I got the impression he thought a wheel would make him go faster in DiRT, and in my experience it will actually get in the way of that because of the arcade steering model.
Nothing wrong with using a steering wheel if you want to, but I just thought why not buy a proper wheel if that's what you want - then you can use it on the PC and get the best out of FORZA or GT (whichever system it is you're buying for).

yeah thats my point, there isn't really any point with a wheel in an arcade game. And for everyone whos got a car knows how a car should handle...

I struggle with a wheel full stop. I've never driven a car in my life (although being 29) therefore the whole concept is completely alien to me.
Regardless of the game, I will always set faster times with a controller than a wheel. I played Forza 2 for about 6 months and never did get used to the wheel (despite sticking with it for the fun factor)

Agree with some others. Menues are horrible. Pressed thru it and accidently bought a car. Music is like all the other car games. Crap.
Bloom bonanza. In rallycross it´s either too dark or too bright. Craziness.
Did however enjoy spending an hour or two driving around on various tracks. Ok game.

my g25 is way too sensitive in dirt2 but it is playable...in Dirt1 there was a horrible steering lag which made the car go, left right left right etc.....
I suck with a gamepad, so I am easier fast with a wheel then a gamepad.
but it's still stupid that my wheel is seen as a 180 deg device then a full 900 deg. hence way too sensitive, and even adjusting the wheel options didnt really help.

You are a retard. You don't think his family gets a huge fucking check in the mail for the use of his name on this game? |
...or rather what's left of his family. besides, mcrae died in his fucking own helicopter, i seriously doubt his wife and daughter need the cash - codemasters is just using his name as a selling point while they've still got the license. don't go calling other ppl retards if neither your own iq is above room temperature nor you've got your facts straight. |
Yes, what a horrible company Codemasters must be using his death to sell copies and not to make a homage to him. I guess the last tournament of the game "Colin McRae Memorial Cup" is just to try and cover up their evil money grubbing plans.
Idiot.

There is a bit too many racing games of late actually, sort of like WW2 shooters. But then whatever, I already built a time machine and assisted in the Omaha beach assault for real so where's the harm in going out and spending millions on a car collection, some tracts of private land and convincing Ken Block to be my friend. I mean, that's what this is all about right....
RIGHT!?
wrong....

There are loads of games, recently, upcoming and in the near future - but I was merely using it as a platform to take the piss out of his last comment, not to make a point.

I like the game so far, but how do you advance in a tournament? It let's me race 1 race, i get 10 points from first place and i head back to the camper. When i start the tournament again, it's first race all over... I am almost level 4 now.

Liking it so far but its basically grid on ice . prefering the actual rally ( ie timing ) to anything else but they seem to be few and far between
and by god that menu gets right on my tits after 5 minutes

game is nice, only problem is that point to point rally is less than 20%....
