Well, same could be told about Gordon Freeman, no?  But he would be 10000x "greatest video game hero" than Master Chief for me.

In the games, the Master Chief never speaks during player-controlled gameplay, making him an almost silent protagonist. Even during cutscenes, the character generally speaks sparingly. Bungie Studios' Frank O'Connor has described the Chief as "so quiet and so invisible, literally, that the player gets to pretend they're the Chief. The player gets to inhabit those shoes [and] apply their own personality."
This like proves it beyond a doubt that he isn't a character at all, it's actually the player that has to invent one and pretend they are some bozo in a suit and helmet it's harder to pretend your Freeman since he is a scientist with glasses and a beard, you know what he looks like.

Anyway, I got Garrett vs Freeman and Freeman won. And yes, he isn't a "full" character with a distinct personality, but everyone creates his own image of him after so many games and experiences we've lived through his adventures.
And Guybrush is also very cool, especially as I finished the second chapter of Tales of Monkey Island today ! Excellent games, waiting for the other 3 chapters !

Traditionally, the gamefaqs/gamespot crowd always seems to go with the old NES heroes like Mario, Link, Samus and Mega Man. The characters from FFVII are also extremely popular. My bet is on Link taking the whole thing.
Following my own heart though, I'd probably go with Ryu Hayabusa.
