All the same features as the existing PS3, a 120GB hard drive, 32% smaller, 36% lighter, and 34% less power consumption. Starts going on sale the first week of September for $299 and apparently 299 EURO's (so would seem Europeans screwed over as usual I'm afraid Razz). The existing PS3's run at the same price as well apparently.

I just wonder how cheap and plastic it looks in person. Some of the leaked pictures from the factory were nasty... but the promo shots above look alright - so I don't know. It is nicer to have a slimmer and cheaper PS3 though.

lol, oh really. which ps3 would that be? there have already been like 3 or 4 different hardware revisions with all different "features", of which i'm mostly talking about ps2 backwards compatibility.

so which version is this ps3? some? none?

Quote:
- It is a PS3 that's been cut down as much as physically possible without preventing the loss of playback of any existing PS3 title out there. It still has blu-ray, it still has wireless, it still has bluetooth and it still has gigabit ethernet.

- "OtherOS" support has been removed. NO LINUX and NO EMULATORS , NO HOMEBREW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Hard drive sizes will be bigger, it will come in 120Gb and 250Gb flavours. It's still replaceable and will actually be slightly easier as it has been relocated to the front of the console.

- It will NOT have any "new" features, such as backwards compatibility or enhanced peripheral support. It's just a PS3, but slightly smaller and cheaper.

- The power supply is still internal, but a different power cable will be used.

- Rear ports are still the same: 1x HDMI, 1x Sony AV port, 1x Optical, 1x Ethernet. And of course a power port.

- A Cheaper Blu-ray drive is being used. It wont be any slower, but expect to see similar issues that another competitor had a while ago.

- Touch-sensitive buttons on the front for power/eject are gone in favour of cheaper push buttons.

- It has a slightly different startup screen. Only slightly.

- It's about 50% smaller than current PS3s.

In short: It's a smaller PS3, but that's it. No new features, no special hardware, just smaller and cheaper. And it wont have sex with you.

this is a BIG FUCK YOU ...FUCK THEM and a GIGANTIC HELLO for the Linux angry hack community and future hacks Very Happy Wink
ps. and the SD card reader has been removed .. so no more checking your family photos on your sd card from your camera

The current (existing) model, the other models your talking about were phased out some time ago.

That went ages ago, but you can always use the USB port either directly to your camera or through an adaptor.

Quote:
"OtherOS" support has been removed

Why would this be removed just from the slim? If it's off the slim then I guess it's off the old PS3's in a firmware update?

From same forum regarding linux support;

Quote:
STOP FUCKING SPECULATING. People use these forums for reference, not for wild speculation.
If the guy really does have access to the PS3 slim, he himself said it's "not finished" and still a prototype, so just because it lacks OtherOS in its firmware right now doesn't mean it will in the future.
Therefor regardless of if the guy is legitimate or not, it is still speculation.

It does seem odd that they would retroactively disable linux on PS3 for no reason.

lol, which part of that list has you scared? The plastic buttons?

Yeah, they've been sitting back quietly this whole time, and now Sony has incurred their wrath all hell will break loose Laughing

I wonder if the USA model will play UK games... if so, I will probably consider buying one in the states next month. $299 = £175 ... £75 cheaper than UK

The PS3 isn't region-locked, so any PS3 will play any PS3 game.

I'm sure they'd let us know if they decided to change that, cause that would really cause a shitstorm.

Still overpirced if you ask me.
Its better than its a slim model. The original PS3 was HUGE.

IMO, they should have dropped the bluray and sold this at a lower rate. You can buy a better BR player and an xbox for less. That is unlesss they want to start supporting full media support?

And when it was released, the PS3 was the best and only future proof blu-ray player.

How much is shipping? And taxes when buying in USA?

I assume the RRP in the states would include taxes? Maybe I'm wrong...! And shipping = free when you travel to the states as much as I do!

Yes, that is true and I never debated that. Have Sony dropped their prices signifcantly since release? No therefore its still an expensive option.

Bearing in mind its still what, 280 GBP for the 80gig its overpriced.

overpriced in the UK Wink it's also $299 in Canada (slim and 80gb regular)... that's only ~272 USD or ~165 GBP or ~193 EU

Yeah, the UK actually got a price hike on the 360 recently as well I believe. Same thing with Nintendo consoles a while back. Either way; the PS3 is cheaper now.

Ispep I almost feel sorry for you, as much as you post about PS3, I had the same feelings when the Dreamcast was getting demolished by the PS2. I still own 3 dreamcasts (one is new in box) because I thought everyone would see the "betterness". Honestly they could drop the ps3 to 200 and I might still not buy one because I don't need a movie player. Anyway keep up the good fight. ( I remember SEGA's first price drop and was fired up..then 99.99 then 59.99 then closeout it happened fast)

So what made them think that backwards compability is a bad idea and had to be abolished right away?
and the argument of "buy our console it's an awesome blu ray playerzzz!" doesn't count anymore since why should a high quality drive be used when we can just put some cheap ass shit in there?
Oh Sony, I pity you...
