Crysis was optimized, but if you tone down the engine quality to Call of Duty 4 levels of graphics, then it would run 3X faster than Cod4's engine I'm sure.
As for RAGE, I hope its not 5 DVDs to download and new vid card to buy just to run it. meh that megatexture seems too demanding...its just a texture ffs.

Eh, Quake Wars had an early version of the so called "mega-texture" tech, and it ran fast (but was forcefully gimped for console kiddies, so only 30fps). Granted it's not as advanced, it will still run fine. Remember, it's designed first and foremost for consoles (for the usual trolls: listen to Carmack's interviews).

What killed it for me ever since the beta was the ridiculous game logic lock at 30 fps. Even if you were to unlock the FPS from the silly 30 fps lock (ridiculous too), everything from animations to physics would still operate at 30fps (with no proper interpolation in between), making everything feel so jerky. Also, the much hyped (before the release of the game) "revolutionary" mega-texture proved it was nothing revolutionary.

But gameplay was fine. I still prefer 2142 over it, though. Is it (QW) still played, or has it died already?

i think it was glottis that posted the gaeplay stats in the modern warfare thread sometime ago, theres I Think like 15 servers left, only a few of them full at a time.

I think it was the last patch that broke the game and everyone left.

Well I only played the demo a little bit and I saw about 5 servers which were pretty empty. I joined one, played for about 15 minutes and owned left and right. I thought to myself "Hey, I'm pretty good at this game, maybe I should get it", but then I looked at the scoreboard and it hit me...THEY'RE FUCKING BOTS!

It was me, some guy and 14 bots.

the Battlefield 2 demo is very popular, though I'm not a fan of the gameplay. I hate the damn jump dive thing everyone does, totally kills battlefield immersion.

Come to think of it I didn't really enjoy any of the currently popular MP shooters.

From googling around, people have mainly left the game because of the lack of updates and additional content.

i had a blast with COD4 online till I realized it quickly turned into he who has more boom boom wins.

Recently my attention was on L4D but I haven't touched that since like november, they broke VS, dropped the ball with the SDK so it really just got boring.

For me, the most enjoying MP experience has always been with the Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (and to a lesser extent the PT) MP mode. It's just fun sneaking up on mercs with a spy. Very Happy

Yes! SCCT! The only MP I really enjoyed. My friend and I played that game to death from 2005 to 2008. Combined we have about 1000 hours. ):

I tried CoD4 and 5 and I'm not too fond of them. Hate spawning in the middle of a bunch of enemies or having to dodge artillery strike after artillery strike.

At first it was fun but then it became annoying.

SCCT MP is still very popular, mainly because there is no alternative. Certainly not the piece of shit DA.

Some group is working on a mod with similar gameplay is being worked on for UT3. Very Happy

I know, Project Stealth. We're keeping an eye on that one.

We still play MP from time to time but only DM and for shits and giggles.

It's not as fun as it used to be, seems like everyone's a fucking idiot.

Seriously, aside from the jaggies (which is sure to create a few tears round here) - those look great! ID Tech5 is shaping up to be pretty nice!

Game doesn't look plastic looking at all. If anything it looks very 'clay' like almost. I think the graphics are great for what they are. You can definatly tell that the lighting and shadowing are far beyond anything else. The textures however, like every modern id game, aren't the greatest. They still do the job however.

Plastic, clay, whatever. It looks like the same way every single game iD makes... Fake, despite all the "advanced" techniques they use. Sure, it looks nice but it lacks "realism" because as in all their games, the game looks what I and many others call "plastic"...

Compare it to Crysis for example, which IMO looks much more realistic:

Rage:

Crysis:

While crysis' skin shaders seem superior, you can hardly call the original screenshot plastic. Also, the lighting between the scenes is disgustingly dissimilar.
You compared two faces, Rages with a bright light in close proximity, while crysis screenshot is using ambient.

I think if you want a better comparison, you'd have to go into crysis and sit next to a flare Razz

Not to mention that the engine doesn't really do anything, its all about the model.

Oh I'm sorry, lighting and shadowing has to do what exactly with the model? The only thing that model does to look better is have more polygon/faces to look less rough. Everything else handled by the engine. That plastic feel you get in Doom 3? The engine and its shaders. The only thing the low-poly models did for Doom 3 is make Dr. Betruger's head look like a hexagon.

Actually, you're wrong twice here. As Leo pointed out (or should I abbreviate it to i now ?! Very Happy) it's the textures combined with effects calculated by the engine that make it look better. The model is the clay you smoothe out as much as you can (more polygons), where the engine then calculates the light refractions and what not. The latter adds shading and depth. Textures are just the paint you throw on the clay.

Also, that pic is in fact from Crysis in-game; you can make it look like that by boosting everything to high settings and running at a decent resolution. IIRC, they released a whole series of shots like this comparing to real-life photographs, all captured using the renderer in the world editor (!).

On the topic of this versus Crysis, I have to agree that ID still has some issues to resolve. Plastic models are just not pretty to look at, and that's got nothing to do with the art direction. The lighting&shading is good, but definitely not as good as it is with the CryEngine. I'm curious to see actual benchmarks of this!

Edit: Screenshots above say it all. Gonna see if I can find the comparison screenshots.
