So yeah, I'm thinking of traveling to Cairo in the end of 2009, maybe a few days before Christmas for about 5-7 days total. So I'm basically just interested in all the culture there, that's why i picked Cairo. Anyway I haven't ordered my tickets yet so if I've picked the wrong destination for exploring the old egypt stuff etc then tell me. Also what should I think about when picking a hotel? Will I need to get any shots before against diseases and so on?

Just general stuff to think about before visiting Egypt, please tell me of your experience as well. If you haven't visited Egypt but any other country in the same area of the world, i'd appreciate some pointers on what to avoid etc.

Thanks.

anyone who thinks egypt is a dangerous place full of terrorist is a moron, North africa altho being muslim it's mostly westernized, you'll find naked chicks, or in bikinis in beaches and pools nad it's the norm
those places live on tourism and they're pretty much open minded
what to visit in egypt? the fucking pyramids of course, if you've got a kickass camera then you'll get some shots that you'll remember for the rest of your life and feel good about
hotels vary on your budget, 5 star hotels are still expensive even in there
as far as I know unless you suffer from aids or got a very weak immunity system you won't need any shots, just STAY OUT of old urban areas due to thieves (not terrorists!!!) you might get mugged, that is all.
it's a good idea to go fall of this year, cuz in the summer you being from sweden I don't think you could bear the heat ( 40's+)

having just got back from diving in Sharm, my biggest piece of advice is 5* = 3* - make sure your hotel is 5*!

Cairo is a dump. much like 99% of arab cities. If you arent arab, you better be prepared for some alienation and dirty looks.

And before any wise ass says anything smart, yes i have been to several arab cities in arab countries and they are all the same. Also, London is shit too.

Went to Cairo with the family. Had a bunch of street urchins follow my mom around masturbating and shouting abuse. We left the next day.

Same thing happened in Istanbul btw, but we were there for two days before going back to a seaside resort.

lol dubai is actually the weirdest country ever. My GF's godparents live out there.. he owns a share in some rich air conditioning company. It's a great place to be if you have a lot of money. Superplex shopping centers, countless resorts and shit.

Tip for Dubai - have a BIG BIG BIG car, or your get rammed off the road :/ the road over there is nuts. Cairo is full of those perverts, I can vouch for Tainted there. The taxi driver gave us a list of roads and areas to stay away from, but it was only after we got home and translated what he wrote that we realized what it was and our actual hotel was bang in the middle of one of the shitty areas. Was one of the worst holidays in my life, and being a traveling student at 18 I had some REALLY shit ones (2 star hotel in turkey was one of the worst) Wink Cairo has some of the most ignorant, dirty + downright nasty locals ever, some of the kids will spit at you in the street while their parents laugh and shout abuse. I will NEVER go back there.

Avoid developing countries and you usually avoid most problems. Has worked fine for me so far. I can understand the historical/cultural motivation to visit some place tho, hope you have a good time Razacka.

Well, I'm traveling with two buddies, one of em has a Persian background though he was born in Sweden and all so i guess you could say he got the "looks", not to be racist. I don't know if that will help us or not. I talked to him this morning as well and he told me that the hotel we're staying at is like a bit outside of the city in a location but still technically a part of Cairo, seems like it's made deliberately that way to avoid the stuff you guys have written about. But yeah we'll see, I don't know how much stuff there is too watch in Cairo so we're thinking of spending a few nights in Cairo, checking out the pyramids and stuff then heading to sharm el sheikh or another city to just relax.

Tainted, the people who were spiting on you etc.. were you in a bad part of Cairo or did it happen in the central of Cairo?

Thanks for the tips and comments so far.

I've been in Hurghada twice and once in Sharm El-Sheikh. I had an amazing time, people were actually friendly, even in the cities. Lots of British and German people on the streets.

The biggest problem are the merchants of course. Sometimes they follow you like 100 meters from their own shop and shout to buy stuff. Sometimes they even recognize your language and say sth to you Laughing The best advice I have is just ignore them. Don't even say anything to them, walk along, and they will go.

And some guy also wanted to buy my mom for 100 or so camels. Laughing

wow, that's like a fortune! Laughing

My uncle went to Egypt and he was watched by military with guns :\ But all in all he said it was great, and you have to watch out for thieves, but you have them in every major city...

Tickets purchased, 7 days, about 2000 euros, 4 people. 5 star hotel, looked really sexy in the picture. I'm really looking forward to this, always wanted to see the great pyramids and so on. So exactly how abusive are the people ? Laughing

Just relax into the atmosphere, watch your possessions as stated by others closely!!, have a good sense of humor and barter etc in stores, while having a laugh wether u understand it all or not lol, but make sure as said you buy a little something even if its not much, it usually ends on a good note.

Above all respect where you are..... I found that all worked for the 2 years I spent in dubai..

p.s the jokes about camels and selling your mother etc are all true, I was offered 8 camels, a stash of TV sets, a bmw and a second hand fishing vessel all for my sister...
