It's just sad to hear Carmack speak about "generations" and "next generation" being the next line of consoles. Just sad that he has sold his soul.

Carmack is still a genius, moreso now than ever, really. Sold his soul? No, he's just not fucking stuck up. Cry some more, PC fanboys.

You'll get your godly gfx in Doom 4. Now stop whining that iD has finally invested in gameplay, like you all asked in the Doom 3 days.

The hypocrisy is epic. Doom 3 = not enough gameplay. RAGE = not enough gfx. Loooooooooooool.

Who said Doom 3 had "not enough gameplay"? It was actually very good, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Confused

huh? how did you manage to miss that bit? people were going on forever about how shit the closet scares were and the whole flashlight thing. this was at the time that hl2 had introduced physics and the gravity gun. in comparison doom3's gameplay was doom1's gameplay and a metric fuckton of people ripped into it for it.

though then again they ripped into the graphics aswell. there was that thing about doom 3 being different shades of black. so maybe ripping the graphics is a fair call on rage too, but still if anyone else remembers, i think they'll get where i'm coming from.

Someone posted "interview" videos of Carmack speaking for who know how long about his engine. This gives the perfect precedence of criticizing his engine. He speaks about his engine as if it is at least the arrival of the messiah, he really likes to listen to his own voice, but with all due respect, his tech just isn't that good.

The truth is that the latest idTech version wasn't as good as everybody expected to be. The shadows, bumpmapping and shaders were quite impressive at that time, but overall it didn't brought anything revolutionary to giustify all the hype grown after several E3s and Nvidia conferences. I wouldn't call it a flop, but surely the inability to show proper physics joint to the difficulty of rendering large areas forced lot of software houses to use different technologies.

I think the important aspect of it was the complete dynamic lighting system it showed, something that is lacking even in UE3. Remember, Doom 3 came out in 2004, but the engine was already available in 2001 (I point you to the leaked 2001 alpha). Smile

the main reason I liked the game was because he was voice acting in it, he's voicing in another new game but I can't recall what it was for the life of me, it's not on imdb either Sad

all i remember from the trailer was he was narrating in the trailer and had some industrial looking yard

I'm assuming your either blind, or haven't viewed any material pertaining to Rage.

http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=12588&game_id=4598&id=139081#img139080

Once again, the game looks amazing. They aren't going for a 100% realistic look like Crytek did with Crysis. They are going for something that looks damn good, but has a sort of stylized look to it as well. Those screenshots look far better then anything UE3 has done, and those lighting effects and depth of field effects are on-par possibly better then what we saw in Crysis.

Game looks amazing, and it won't be a system rapist like Crysis was in order to max things out.

You guys should watch the quakecon keynote by carmack if you like the tech, he goes on about his iphone projects a fair bit, but there's at least 30-45mins+ of idTech 5 specific info in there.

most relevant point to this thread is that he repeatably talks about how his renderer is more or less the same as most renderers these days and the bigger difference in his engine is how his resource management allows for better looking and different kinds of environments to the competition.

it's also pretty clear from previous interviews and the keynote, that since RAGE is more focused on multi-platform development and a constant 60fps than Doom 4, which will run at 30fps and be able to crank up the gfx 3 times as much, that Doom 4 will look pretty awesome.

You do realize that Crysis (or atleast Warhead) is extremely well optimized.
