I used to have this problem when i ran the original cs in opengl mode instead of directx. I vote it's the gfx card/drivers. Also there's a small chance it's audio drivers, it's not unheard of.
Your temps seem fine by any rate :/

When I had this problem, my temperatures were also fine supposedly. I used to run an encoding app that I knew stressed my CPU properly, and a monitor app next to it to see when it would lock up. Temps never rose above 60, which is what made me thing it wasn't the CPU. I ended up replacing the PSU to no prevail, until I said "fuck it" and bought a Zalman.

Wait, so under stress it doesn't lock up? So it probably isn't the CPU... How long did you run it for?

Nah, 15 is more than enough to see if the CPU fails. So it is probably something else.

Could be. Run ATI Tools (doesn't matter if you don't have ATI hardware) to stress the GPU, and monitor the temps.
Could be chipset (on the motherboard) as well, they get very hot in hardware these days as well.

aTI tools says "kernel mode not running" and it doesn't show any info
Clicking "Show 3D view" shows a 3D cube
Scan for artifacts made the PC shut down at first try

The you probably have problems with the GPU. The cube test is made to stress the card.

HD4770s are great cards and go for like 80 euros, if you can scratch that money together.

dunno if it helps, but a while back i had a problem ONLY when i played games
the game would lock up... picture would stay on screen, but the sound would also loop. turned out my graphics card was dying... could be the problem... but like the other dude said, test ur ram, test ur cpu, if they pass just fine without ur pc locking up, time for a new card.
also, ur card doesnt need to be overheating to still be the cause of the problem... mine wasnt... until one day the fucking pc just died, and then refused to even boot that gave me a nice little heart attack.

Stefan, thanks I'll consider moving to ATI since nvidia now are too damn expensive, there's gonna be some artifacts but not a big worry
Chiv, the picture doesn't stay open for me, the monitor shuts down completely like on sleep and the sound either loops or stays on normally for a while, first I have to make sure what causes the problem, I made a shitload of research and there hasn't been even ONE single solution that works, just nobody knows the answer
first I'lm gonna buy a new CPU fan like Leo suggested, stock ones do suck and I've been using it for over a year.. if the problem persists I'm gonna try to scrap some money together and get a new GPU if the problem still persists I'm gonna sell the whole damn thing part by part and buy a new PC.. I just cba with a problem I don't know the cause of

Take it to a computer shop and get a solid answer imo. They'll probably have a spare gfx card to swap in and try out.

But this also opens the door to giving him the wrong answer to in order to lure him to buy more from the store.

well i didnt suggest that your screen stays on, all im saying is that when i was having graphics card problems, the pc stayed on while the sound kept looping... i assume cpu problems usually lead to proper shutdowns, all i was doing was telling you i had a problem that sounds similar, and it was the gfx card.
do the cpu stress test, if ur pc doesnt lock up, im positive its the graphics card. thats dying.

but if my GPU is the problem why can I play HD movies just fine? do anything else except for 3D shit, it makes sense that the CPU overheats since new games usually use 90%+ of it

i dont know for nvidia but for ATI only programs like powerdvd when playing bluray support gpu acceleration, or using very specific HD rips with very specific programs .....
Even if it used your gpu, its not demanding at all, just like 2D mode.
could you try the benchmark called "furmark" ? it has a stress mode also.
everything is pointing at your gpu now , i would even save the cash for a new cpu cooler if it doesnt go above 60C on stress

hell, i run a 30" lcd at 2560x1600 res, and i watch movies (standard and 1080) on it all the time, and it ONLY ever froze up on me in games. sometimes it'd be fine for an hour, sometimes it'd hang after 15 mins or less, but only EVER in games, no problems browsing, or media playing, or using ANY apps, it was only EVER in games.
funny thing was, it actually played counter-strike fine, without hanging at all... i could play it for hours... anything else, would always freeze eventually.
it was weird, because i also used ati tool to stress test my card and it went through without any glitches... but in the end, the test was irrelivant because it was 100% gpu problem, and i only had confirmation when the screen hit massive distortions on my desktop, i reset the pc, and it didnt start... waited an hour, restarted... it worked... 2 minutes later, distortions, restarted, wouldnt boot, and never did again.

well fuck me, only thing I can do is sell this computer to someone and buy a new one.
now it's happening not only in games but in OS too, as soon as the OS would start it only takes a couple of seconds for it to crash, say everything is fine, I press start button on the desktop and it'd crash..
I uninstalled the GPU drivers and nothing happened, I installed the 190.58 and it did the same problem again..
now I want to downgrade the drivers but I don't seem to be able to.. only the latest nvidia drivers install..

I'm thinking either 9600GT or 250GTS
is 250GTS better than 8800GT and 9600GT?
I know 5's are medium-low end
the current benchmarks on google are vague

front jack ports don't work anymore, I put BIOS settings to default and I think this might have been the cause
how do I get it back?
