So I was in the states for awhile visiting family, and had brough along my 360. 'Hey, I'll buy a points card while I'm here!' I figure why not, 1600 points for $20 isn't a bad deal. I try to activate it and it throws up error after error. I call XBox and I found out points cards are region locked. Wtf?
So I make a US account/gamertag, setting my Locale to US. Woah! My dash is totally different. Ooh! Free netflix trial, hey I'm in the states why not?! Try to register a trial and they want billing info. Put in my CC number...oops need an american credit card, or more specifically a card that has a US billing address.
Throughout this process I also discover it's impossible to change an existing gamertags locale. So if I ever moved to the US, my Canadian tag is pretty useless. The moral of this story: Microsoft is a company of faggots, and licensing/region restrictions are fucking cruel.
