in a lot of games i get a tiny ammount of stuttering, its as if the game will be running perfectly at a high framerate but every so often it will skip a few frames and its really bugging me
it happens more in some games than others, the witcher and sins of a solar empire have it badly but in x3 its hardly noticable

also it doesnt seem to happen atall in some other games

i have ruled out the graphics card, hard drive, motherboard & processor because each of them has been changed since i originaly started having the problem

im thinking that now it either has to be ram or power supply but memtest didnt report any problems with the memory & i have no way to test my psu

here is my system

Windows Vista ultimate64
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 (also tried a Q6600)
Nvidia GTX295 (also tried a GTX280)
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX
Asus P5Q Deluxe (also tried a Abit IP35)
Corsair HX 620W Psu
500gig Maxtor SATA (recently installed after my old HDD gave up the ghost)
300gig Maxtor SATA

i have also tried it with and without a SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio installed to i know that the sound isnt a issue

i run it all at stock speeds, all my drivers have been updated on a regular basis and my temps seem to be fine

i run all my games at 1680 by 1050

any ideas?

Can you take a video of it happening ?

Anyway, maybe it's a software problem, have you done a clean reformat ? Install win7 clean and cross fingers. Don't install any drivers unless the absolutely necessary. No mobo drivers especially.

yep Smile tried windows 7 and altho its a lot better the problem is still there, i also tried it with only the basics installed (direct x, graphics and sound drivers) but it was still there

i have no way of making a video of it but as vista uses more memory do you think a upgrade to 8gig of 1200MHz memory could fix the problem? my current ram is 800MHz

i thought as its running better on a os that leaves more free mem then adding mem might solve it? i could be wrong tho and it would be a expensive mistake to make if i am

4gb is enough, doesn't justify hickups on your PC, which is a beast.

But maybe the mem is shitty (?). Can you borrow some from a friend ? Also, have you messed with your BIOS settings ? Is there a BIOS update available ?

i have tried tweaking the settings and i have updated it too but still no luck, i dont know anybody else with a decent pc in my area so my only option will be to buy more ram but if you say that 4 gig will be plenty then maybe a upgrade from my 800MHz set to a 1200Mhz set will sort it?

i was thinking of picking up a set of these
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-141-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

actually as you seem to know your stuff then maybe you could help me pick some ram? Smile
anything for less than £100 from here would be in my budget

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=8&subid=817

because after some reading i hear that the latency can also determin the speed so in some cases a lower MHz could actually be faster

Oh, those are good.

Very GOOD !!

I hate you.

P.S.: Not that it would fix your problem or anything, unless it's really mem-related. Because it's not performance-related.

ahh ok Razz maybe ill hold off a while then on the ram, my only other option would be the psu but i would have thought that if i can complete crysis and warhead with no problems then it isnt a power issue

someone on another forum that i use just suggested that maybe its the res that i play at
he said that maybe its causing some kind of bottle neck with my card and that trying a bigger monitor (higher res) might solve the problem

1680x1050 is a normal res, it cannot bottleneck the GTX295 !!!

And how will higher res resolve that ? It made no sense.

thanks Smile some people have mentioned motherboard drivers to me but tbh i have never used one Confused i was under the impression that they were talking abotu the bios so maybe this could be the cause?

this is my motherboard http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=esOE5RDJVEmQI86w
but if you take a look at the download link there are a lot of downloads available and i have no idea what ones i would need and what would just be taking up space
