32bit apps works ok on 64 bit system, it's the drivers availability you must check... drivers MUST be 64bit compiled, so check if all your hardware/peripherals have 64bit drivers available before you choose.

If you have hardware that doesn't have 64-bit drivers -> the hardware is over 9000 years old. Neutral

My pentax camera only has 32bit drivers... yes it's not new, but it still works perfectly, it really pisses me off having to boot up ubuntu every time I want to download my photos... but it would be more annoying to throw away a perfectly working camera just for the drivers.

While I agree with you, it's not Microsoft's fault - they are not making the drivers. Also, you can't say "but it's their fault they don't support 32-bit drivers on their 64-bit system", but it's wrong, as translating the memory addresses and data is impossible in any feasible way. So you end up with "well what could have I done" and the answer is really little, but this is how the things are. I have replace my camera as well for the same reason.

Depends on the type of connection. Some cameras expose themselves as hard-drives (or other mass storage device), so Windows uses its own default drivers.

well that's what his pentax should've been too, but they had to go 'install this driver before connecting your camera'

Who's blaming microsoft?? I just suggested him to check drivers availability before installing 64bit windows.... I know damn well it's pentax fault... those assholes! Evil or Very Mad

Nah man, didn't mean you specifically (even though I said "you" Laughing). When Vista was released, some (= "most") XP drivers didn't work, and of course people started "Fuck Microsoft, they didn't make the drivers work, bla bla bla". I've heard the same nonsense about 64-bit vs 32-bit OS. Smile

Yes, of course. It probably require some shady software installed, and it's so crap they can't port it to 64-bit. Laughing

Well, for one, Creative couldn't even write proper 32bit drivers for a lot of cards. I'm so happy that my mobo has a Realtek HD chip. Genius is even worse, even their XP drivers are crappy, they didn't even make Vista drivers for their then priciest mice and webcams.

BTW, you could always get a card reader for your cam's memory card and then the only functions you can't reach are webcam mode and charging. Charging can be solved if you got a wall charger.

Why not pull out the sd card and connect it to a usb reader?

Vista tried to pull that off once too on my machine when I was creating partitions.
Then and there I deleted the partition following the 100MB one and expanded the 100MB one to what I actually wanted and thus it was gone.
=> cant be needed

Another thing I don't get... I now have a new bootloader, with 2 entryes: "Windows Vista/2008/7" and "Linux".

It doesn't look at all like a Microsoft bootloader, and I do not have a linux partition at all!! Is it part of Win7??

Of course not ! MS doesn't support/recognize linux. Even in that case, it would say "other os" or something. I think.
