...so... for the platform that has the most robust and accurate control scheme, they offer the laggiest, most imprecise and prone to error control scheme possible, ever devised?
i think i'll say no thank you very much

Did you not see that they're talking about things other than games, too?

Forget videogames. Natal has the potential to be the biggest thing to happen to human/computer interfaces in years.

BTW, accuracy and robustness of a particular input device is dependent on the task. Just FYI.

Imo it's too early to judge.A week ago i connected the wiimote to my pc just for fun and tested it in HL2 and COJ2.Results were,to say the least, good. So, why are you so negative? We need innovations and new control schemes.

I wonder if it'll recognize someone wanking as cocking a shotgun in FPS game. Because that would rule and I'd buy one.

i'm all for innovation
but natal doesn't have a chance of working like advertised
it would need a ridiculously advanced skynet AI to parse the camera data
in ten years perhaps, but not yet
with multiple cameras perhaps, but not with one
with radar/laser/interference ranging perhaps, but not with a two dimensional image

i dont know anything about natal really, but is it essentially a device, that if used for pc, expects me to sit infront of it and wave my arms around like a drunk man trying to hail a taxi, to make shit happen on my screen?

am i too old fashioned to want to stick with my mouse and keyboard? atleast until they come up with something useful like a WORKING vr helmet and gloves or some shit that is more that just a gimmick? Very Happy

Not really. Please read the following.

It's not a single 2D camera, like a webcam. It uses both an RGB camera, in tandem with a depth sensor (a combination of an infrared projector combined with an CMOS sensor). It also has a microphone array (multiple mics to allow for audio source localization), and it's own on-board CPU, to process sensor data before sending it to the host device (360 or PC).

You could at least read up on the basic design of the thing, before you come up with all these reasons why you think it can't work.

David Rutter, producer of FIFA for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, has put his foot down, literally. He's not moving it. At least, he's not moving it to play a 75-minute soccer match in his living room.

Here is the problem..motion control requires moving... most people don't want to constantly expend that much energy all the time.. it is why many party games work.. you start, you stop, you take a break you get your turn. Most of the hard core nintendo games feature less motion control.

You're not going to see the new Doom using this. People aren't going to want to run around their apartments for 12 hours straight.. though it should be mandatory for WoW..

this is a monochrome camera with flashing lights
the shadows do give a good rough estimate of object relations to eachother
it's essentially extracting a normal map from the scene and estimating depth from that, which while better than nothing, is not a true 'depth sensor' by a long shot
remains to be seen how well it functions when more videos come out
the e3 demo was just horrid

as a film-maker i'd really love to see a proper scenery depth recording, or even reliable estimations
would really help special effects implementation
i'm looking forward more to hacker teardown of the hardware than actual implementations of the product

It really shows us how little thought goes into this stuff. Everyone who thinks VR, minority report interfaces, etc are going to be awesome are just so short sighted. VR is only going to be awesome when we've got some kind of mindlink going on. The Minority Report interface is only going to be good for athletes who need to build amazing arm strength and stamina. pommel horse guys?

Everyone else is going to wheeze and have a heart attack 20 minutes into the thing..

Remember nintendo shipped out the extra straps and covers for the wii-motes.. yeah.. well when this kind of stuff comes out they're going to have to be shipping out head gear to protect themselves from the inevitable lawsuits from all the collapsing nerds..

first it was wiimotes in TVs, next its going to be pasty white foreheads mounted on coffee table corners.
