Hi guys, I need some help with a cpu/mobo upgrade to compliment my new purchase of a 285 GTX without spending stupid amounts of cash. I've been trying to source this stuff myself but it's giving me a headache and I would appreciate some knowledgeable help.

My current rig:
AMD 5600+ x2 @ stock spd
Geforce 285 GTX
DDR2 - 667 - 2gig
Thermaltake TR2 RX 550w psu
windows 7

I am going to be purchasing from this local store: http://www.etstore.co.uk

I am thinking about going for the Intel core 2 Duo E8500 - will this give me a significant boost from the 5600?

If so, which one of these mobo's should I go for?

http://www.etstore.co.uk/items.asp?Cc=94&iTpStatus=0&Tp=&Bc=

I would like to purchase tonight so any help would be gratefully appreciated!!!

Depends on what you call significant.

As for those boards, all of them except the msi are based on the same chipset so there wont be much difference performance-wise between them. There might be some features like network, sound or oc options for which some people would pay a premium. This looks like good value.

Thanks Swingman, that does look like good value, my only reservation is whether my GTX 285 is going to fit or if it will cover the RAM ports :/

One big thing that low-cost buyers can appreciate is flexibility. The P5QL Pro supports full-length cards in every one of its six expansion slots, broadening its market to include both low-budget builders and repair personnel. Gamers with modified graphics cards will find space for triple or quad graphics card coolers without any cable clearance issues.

Doesn't say anything about ram slots but if it had been an issue they would have probably noticed it.

Thanks for the links swingman, I didn't even notice that bundle deal so cheers! Very Happy

Now to get to work....

Edit: This has gained me an extra 15 - 20 fps in Crysis and Arma II Very Happy Very Happy

wtf -.-
thats some waste of potential there man.

That 8500 EASILY clocks 4.2-4.4 Ghz on air. Well. Thats if you have a nice mb and good ram.

well. 4Ghz is the absolute MINIMUM. even with a p43 board and cheapo 800 ram.

I hope u overclock?! else the core2duo you bought is a HUGE WASTE OF MONEY. (you can get an q9550 for ~30-40 bucks more)

I haven't overclocked before no, but I am doing some research at the moment as the overclocking capabilities of the cpu did sway me into buying it, I also bought a good arctic cooler to cope with experimentation.

I'm actually extremely happy with the fps i'm getting at stock, cryostasis is now running at 50-60fps with a few drops here & there instead of 10-35fps, Arma II is now a steady 45fps as opposed to 20-34fps and Crysis 40-55fps instead of 20-35fp using the same settings.

If I can hit 4GHz that will be a bonus, but if not I'm still extremely happy with my purchase. Thanks for informing me of the potential.
