personally I think automatic makes it way too easy to drive but gives you less control over the car
I've been using manual for years, for many reasons, due to me being used to it, gives me more control over the car and I just don't have the money to get automatic.
oh and it's about car transmission

i love driving manuals, far more control and you can have more fun, but at the moment, i drive an automatic, its great for cruising, smoking a big fat spliff in one hand and holding the steering wheel with the other...

manual , better fuel economy , you need don't use your breaks as much as with automatic and that means Running costs will be lower .
it's funny tho , most americans can't drive stick , dumbasses can't use 2 pedals at the same time ..
anyway , back to subject , apparently now most car manufacturers use automatic transmission on cars , even exotic ferraris use tip tronic-like gearboxes , which arent too bad , it's nice to have a flappy paddel gearbox to make it more sporty. but SUV's like Range Rover Sport come with automatic transmission as standard , but in that case , most of them actually are better with an automatic , remember older 4x4's with 2 sticks ?

NEVER driven an automatic. Unless you put up makeup/eat every time you drive I don't see why u need an automatic. Uses more fuel too... unless you don't know when to change gear tho.

Use your drive train to slow a car is utterly stupid. Brakes are cheaper to replace than a transmission. Secondly take your stereotyping bullshit else where, there are tons and tons of car enthusiasts here who strictly drive manual transmission cars. As for people who opt to drive auto's, there's absolutely thing wrong with it. Some people have long commutes or a life style that makes driving an automatic horrible. I'd take a S class that ISNT offered with a 6-speed any day.
Lastly all the performance "automatics" you mentioned are not automatics. They are a traditional manual transmission with no clutch pedal. Porsche's PDK, BMW's SMG, Ferrari's F1 gearboxes are all real manuals. The stuff they put on Carolla's is another story.

In dense urban environments, especially in cities prone to traffic jams, driving manual is dumb in my opinion, because it's too much of a hassle.

yeah, i like my left knee, and want to keep it working properly long into my adult life... still i do prefer manuals, but auto = easy + no hill starts. but i agree, my bimma absolutely destroys petrol, but i suppose thats what you get for 2.5l.

it won't fuck your transmission , i mean , shit as long as you don't have more than 2500 (depending on the engine) revs it wont do shit ,i've never met somone who fucked their transmission up doing this.
i'm not saying that driving an auto is bad or something , i sure aint economical , the only thing i'm saying that people who bitch that manual is too hard ... like my aunt ..
hmm , well , the DSG on VW's IS semi-automatic . the PDK and SMG , etc are manumatic if i'm not mistaking.
shit , i wouldnt go for an S-Klass with manual either ..

taking into account you dont have reasonable amount of cash for a new car you're probably ending up with a shitty small-sized car. get a used reliable german hardware with nice run @ 50-80 km. oh and 2.8l engine being the minimum for mid-sized.
you aint gonna get any control with hyundai getz you know |
2.8 l ?? since when ??
on the other hand i'd rather have a 5 series / A6 / Passat / Alfa 159 / you name it manual than automatic or semi.

since hes referring to "control" aka fun? you can burn wheels with your 2.0 engine but aint gonna pass 2 trucks on the highway within 4-5 seconds.
also he seems to be interested in a new car, because in used car market slushbox wont be any different in a price than manual.
e39 5-series would be a good bet. a6 also. passat is too much of a "people's car" if you know what i mean. alfa - lol. absolutely unreliable car. forget about italian and french cars, or if you drive like a papa, then perhaps.

Manual, no doubt about it.
But it's still nice to drive automatic, but i would never buy one myself.

Only way to drive is manual...but the last thing i want to do is drive a manual thru new york city traffic..i would rather kill myself
but I like driving my chevvy impala with big radio antenna, often people will go slightly to the right to let me pass them..yay for "undercover police or agent"
here is in US, automatic is more common, you have have to pay more for manual transmition but then again most US folks do not know how to drive a manual

man , what the fuck are you talking about ??
power to weight ration is number one when it comes to passing 2 trucks ..
you can have a fucking 1.4 tsi engine or a normally aspired 1.4 engine on a leightweight car and go faster than 2.8l dipshit that weighs 2 tons.
actually , i browse mobile.de and other site often just for kicks , automatic is harder to resell (and cheaper in price) in europe since most don't want to spend more fuel than necesarry.
sure alfa is unreliable , but god damn i love how 159SW looks , Renault are actually quite good , engines are reliable , sure build quality isnt the gratest but it aint bad , not to mention the recent Citroen C series that are really good and reliable (except C2) . shit , i took a ride in 2004 Megane hatchback (looks very bad) with a 1.4 or 1.6 16v man that engine was really kicking , sounded great too and the car handled alot better than i expected .
passat is also great , CC looks very nice , and is alot better than B6 , which imho stank , they fucked up , they are very unreliable (just look on vw forumus) and build quality isnt very good , B5-5 was and is alot better .
and if we're talking about reliability , buy japanese , subaru , lexus etc

Well I grew up with manual and you're right it does become natural like breathing. So natural that when first switching to an automatic you'll be reaching for the gearstick and clutch more often than you'd like - but automatic is even more natural, using less effort, and much easier.
Oh and hill starts; he means not having to worry about clutch control on hills. Just put it in drive and off you go.

Try driving manual in rush hour traffic, every weekday. Not fun. I driven manual for about 10 years. Well, grew up, had a family, nobody else could drive my car, guess what? Manual now sucked. Sold the car, got automatic, and dont miss manual at all.
Manual is fun in certain instances, but definately not fun in stop and go traffic.

well my car is automatic as i talk to my phone most of the time, and it really helps. especially in the city.
oh and fuck handsfree. never liked it.
and about power to ratio - you're correct. but if we're going to to accelerate from 140kph+ your lightweight car with a 1.4 r4 turbo engine wont be doing anything. no matter how light that car is. the bigger the speeds, the more cylinders you need<:

Actually in my car, it naturally keeps the bite point on hills, so i can have no feet on the pedals at rest on a hill... in my old manual i used to ride the clutch alot...

I could also peel out the tires much easier with stick. I do miss that. And yes, downshifting (to 3rd gear lowest) makes the feeling of slowing down more powerful than using the old brake method.
Another good thing with stick is when your battery is weak or starter is going, you can always push the car - hop in and slam it into 1st gear and the car will turn over.
That saved me bunch of times!

I drive both and love both. My car is a 6 speed obviously, and my truck is a Auto.
Some of the new computer controlled Autos out perform Manuals becasue they can shift so much faster and at optimum RPM Eg. A new Mustang GT . But i still prefer a manual.

uhm, not quite. Automatic is an option and manual is standard on every car where it's available in both. All Chevys are like $1000 extra for automatic for instance.

Most cars sold in the United States since the 1950s have been equipped with an automatic transmission, though it remains common practice to advertise the cheaper priced model with a manual transmission and treat the automatic as an upgrade.
