Is this game better played in real time or turn based?

I've had the retail disks since it first came out years ago and I always get back to installing it but i've always sucked at the combat aspect with spells and shit in reail time.

I just got the craving to play it again and remembered the game had turnbase play as well, does the combat improve by using it?

real time but being able to pause it to issue orders was my preferred method.

I could never get the fucking scripts to work right for the spell casters was one of my big issues, I'd have all these bad ass spells memorized and they'd run in with their quarterstaff

I usually play real time without AI and issue commands manually only, with pausing whenever necessary to issue new commands.
All I let the AI do was defend itself when they're attacked by melee attacking back, but no spells or skills without me.

Playing the game full real-time without pausing to issue commands and stuff would be pretty crazy.
Unless you're playing on easy or something maybe, I dunno.

btw, slightly off topic, but I remember seeing some thread about an indie RPG game that looked kinda similar to BG2. Does anyone remember what that was? I'm not sure if it is even out yet.

Obvious.

Try playing with a mage on real time. hehe.

Try this from what i can remember u can leave real time always on, except when :
Enemy spoted: auto-pause
Enemy attacks (by melee or spell):auto- Pause
Some npc turns hostile: auto-pause
trap discovered: auto-pause
Never -ever let your mages and chars manage their spells alone Rolling Eyes

The rest amidst the fight u just pause alot to direct the battle in micro-management type Very Happy

+1
Even prefer it compared to Starcraft ffs !

Anyway, I played real-time+constant pausing for spells and deep breaths. I mostly played on easier difficulty I think.

Some battles are wickedly difficult, you either leave them for later, or try to abuse (I mainly overused the cloudkill spell)

I thought about making a thread for this (or both Baldur's Gate games) in the golden oldie section Very Happy

Recently started playing BG again with the BG2 engine (BG Tutu ftw!)
and I started as a Thief (yeah, pretty stupid seeing as you get Imoen who's a pretty good thief) and damn I get my ass kicked almost everywhere.... I suppose I'm just too stupid for D&D battles Very Happy

What's missing in BG2 is a pure mage (not that evil dude, he doesn't fit with good rep parties, heh)

So I always created a pure mage, no school of magic selected. Human or half-elf. Infinite power in late levels, with the proper support. Also, emphasis on monster summoning on 1-1 battles so that they leave me alone.

Of course, when you're up against creatures with magic immunity like golems and dragons, then it was over for me, I could never kill stupid mofo Firkraag !! Had to leave him alone Sad

After finishing BG2, I tried to start playing the first BG and I was hugely disappointed Crying or Very sad

I finnished the séries 3 times. And the 3 times were amazing.
1- With a Paladin
2- With a Mage (actually guess i ended as mage 2 times cos was the most deep gameplay with the strategy of selecting the spells in advance-rest, hehe sometimes was overkill in defense: mirror images-bar-metal stone-skin-fire shied-spell shield, etc all up lol)
3- With a thief

Now about your post, once u got stealth and a good backstabing multy plus a decent short sword...man the first enemy will allways be your one attack insta-kill, since they cant see you... i loved when my thief killed, then after a couple of seconds or after the rest of the enemy cames looking you just morph into the shadoes again, let them go for your party, and slash! another one goes down, throat sliced from behind, multyplier damage x6... Cool

Great memories Very Happy

I still prefer first one over the second one. It had better setting and progression. First you're in open sword coast area, then huge city of Baldurs Gate for the finish.

A bit off topic but if you're into replaying BG there are mods that runs BG1 with the BG2 engine (higher resolutions etc).

Can't be arsed to find a link but google for great justice.

The first one felt more like a traditional fantasy, with you setting off an adventure. The sequel was the better game, but I still have fond memories of the original. A bit similar to Fallout vs Fallout 2 - although BG2 is a lot tighter woven.

Looks like BWP is at 7.0 atm;
http://www.shsforums.net/index.php?showtopic=40337

Quote:
The BiG World Project aims to merge all games of the Baldur's Gate series and the additional contents created by its community in one massive adventure, including a modification of BG1 to run BG1 with the more modern engine of BG2, plus the added functionality of ToB expansion. Now all new functions which are introduced only with BG2 are also available for BG1. This signifies, BG1 uses just like BG2 the same graphic arts, the same character kits, the same magic and the same rules. Now even for those which know BG1 by heart this is a new play experience. Besides, it also includes an additional transition from BG1 to BG2. And all this can expanded with additional mods.

It's fucking kickass to play the whole BG1+BG2+TOB seamlessly with the same character (I last played starting with a lvl 1 monk since the BWP imports the BG2 classes to BG1 as well - try it if you want an extra hard difficulty for starting out Very Happy), AND with all the mods you could possibly want.

Edit: ^ yeah there's a mod for playable Irenicus - can't remember iits exact name right now but it's out there.

That would not be enjoyable me thinks. Challenging. But not enjoyable.
Unless someone like to see how good of an AI script they are able to write.

Still haven't tried to install BWP. Read thru some pages at their forum, seems lots of bugs. And at the last page I found this
Quote:
In general:

Since the last BWP release there were 63 new mod-versions released with changes which make the current BWP version unstable. At the moment we're at a point that you have to much changes to do, to get a good megamod running. Therefore if you want to do a new BWP installation I recommend to wait for the next BWP version.

Greetings Leomar

Leomar seems to be the mastermind of the BWP project.
