Recently, a lot of music players have been making it to market, making the choice of "the best player" even harder.
Tell us what music player you use, why, how long you've been using it, and some advantages/disadvantages.

What about mPlayer, XMMS and Kplayer?

Linux -> KPlayer or mp123 in the console sometimes

Windows -> Winamp 5

iTunes is primarily optimized for "ease of use" per se, meaning that the thing is a pain in the ass if you've been using a computer for 24 hours or more.

First off, it's a nazi for WMA files. It automatically converts them to it's proprietary AAC format, a process I have neither the patience nor the motivation to endure. My tracks are fine the way they are (older/pyr@ tracks in MP3, old CDRips in WMA, newer ones in 350 vbr OGG (almost lossless @ less than 10mbs a song). Any player I use should support all of my music the way it is, not attempt to cut it's quality down to accomodate it's own crappy format. It's like a Sony Walkman converting all your music to it's own half-assed format instead of supporting MP3. Oh, wait...

WinAmp is definitely #1 when it comes to playback. It supports everything you can toss at it. Okay, almost anything. WA also has the best collection of skins and plugins, and it's a flexible platform if you're into designing your own. The equalizer is also good if you know how to use one, and if you don't there are also presets.

Of course, winamp has it's flaws. If you compare it to theflawless user interface and ease of use of iTunes, which sadly has turned it's cold brushed-metal ass on those using WMA. Hell, even the idiocy that is Windows Media Player 10 has a better Media Library than does WinAmp.

For years, WinAmp has been the undisputed king of digital audio. Sadly this success has caused the folks at NullSoft to shove their heads up their asses and leave WA relatively unchanged for a few years now, save a shitty new skin, and leave all modification to a community whose code can at times be half-assed (God knows how many times the various WinAmp alarm clocks have failed me).

Is there any program that combines the liberal approach to formats, the features and playback quality, and the relatively low amount of resources consumed by WinAmp with the Media Library useability of iTunes, or at least WMP? Or at least a (working) plugin?

foobar2000 is great and with a plugin which emulates the winamp stuff you can use all the winamp stuff for IRC etc that is available. The interface isn't the best but it plays everything well and you don't really notice when it's minimised to the system tray.

That's why they cancelled it. BTW, it sounds more to me that you are suited for foobar2000 instead.

edit:

I tried iTunes for music playing and I'm sure I won't touch anything than the music store there. It's one big memory hog (It uses nearly 40mb!), and there is no "open file" menu. It has no support for ogg vorbis and wma, only mp3 and mp4. There are also no options for file associations and my icons are still the itunes ones even if they are associated with Winamp 5. So only reason for keeping that player is the music store.
I'm also feeling sorry for all you guys that have mp3 players that need these kind of apps and don't appear as harddrives etc.

foobar2k for me, I used to use winamp and then iTunes, but the memory footprints got way too big. foobar uses around 10% of the memory and I actually prefer the mpglib they use, I find it sounds slightly different to fraunhofer based proggies.
