Played about 50 turns now on my 1.3 grand campaign, no stablity issues at all. The only thing that's still pissing me off is the pathfinding during a siege - for example having your men ignore an open gate and instead use the rappels on the other side of the city is beyond annoying. Still, it's worth putting up with as the game is great in almost every other way.

hard boots? seriously?
that's a driver issue
nothing to do with the game
unless if it has some seriously invasive protection (starforce), but it's just plain steam so no, it's a driver issue

Hm...I did a "clean" install, means no sub folders whatsoever, took care about all that before installing.

I am thinking it has to do with the 1.3 patch, some get the freezes and some not. I also tried some older ATI drivers like 9.3 and what have you, same result...freeze! within minutes of getting in to the campaign map.

"ATT" sorry but not sure what you mean there. As for the graphic driver,
what I normally do is delete the drivers the normal way, boot in safe mode and run Driver Sweeper, then CCleaner, again in safe mode. Boot up normally and install the new driver. So in theory there should not be any traces left from the old driver.

No thats right, its how i do it, but I was more concerned that Ati tray tools if used uses registry type hooks or something.

I always remove Ati tray tools first before drivers and delete the profiles etc when asked.., then remove drivers boot to safe mode and use cleaner etc, then delete any remaining folders in hidden areas that sometimes get left. (on odd occasions driver sweeper does not seem to remove all traces.)

Anyhow annoying, unless its got something more to do with your X2 card where as Im on a single 4870.

Well, that rules out gfx driver problem. So, maybe it's a sound driver problem.

yeah if its hard boots and blue screen lockups etc etc its normaly one of three things,

1) card drivers

2) sound drivers

3) overclocking issues.

Ok. will uninstall the sound driver (Creative) and see if I still get the freezes, should be pretty fast to check as it happens like 3-8 min in game.

1.3 introduced dual core support so its likely thats the problem. Maybe setting affinity to only one core would help.

If I change the "Affinity" setting to only one core, the game simply goes black and freezes on map load Sad.

Will try the sound theory next.

I am getting "Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered." in both ETW and now in Mass Effect (thought I would install that to see if I get the same "freezes/crashes" and I do...well, at least the game goes black, still running sort a in the background and I can't get out using alt/ctr/del, sometimes I can but not all the time = hard boot.

The temps are running up to like 65-70 max, checking it with Everest on my G15 screen all the time (was one of my 1st concerns)

Back to the drawing board I guess. There are so many threads about the "atikmdag stopped responding" on the net I don't even know where to start looking .

Yeah ive had it first off with my 8800gtx before i went to ati again. Although this was not good news for my gtx as it later artifacted when I thought it was all sorted and had to rma it.

Usually though that crash is relating to driver software soley or with a combination of software and clocking issues. If your pretty sure its neither now of those, hmmmm I guess you will have to accept the card might be going lame lol.

The threads about atikmdag are of course the same as ntldmk ones etc pretty much confusing with no real info lol.. Get a card bench test going, Ati tray tools uses a bench test/overclock stress test and you might find that if its the card it will let you know with that.

Probably other card stress testers out there as well, but never really had to use them perse' even clocking with the CCC will test if you use autotune.

Same scenario. I got that message and error first, then artifacting, then death with my 8800 GTS. It's not looking good Captain! (forgive me, always wanted to be able to say that Very Happy )

I used to have that message in some games with some geforce card, but it was just a driver/game incompatibility. so it's not necessarily a hardware problem.

I think I nailed it down. Ran Memtest86 all night and i got errors on the 6th and 7th pass. I took out 2 of my RAM modules and put back the Corsair fan that came with the modules (took that off when I installed the cooler for my HD4870x2) and now all seems to be fine. Played the game for almost one hour.

Could be that the 2 modules I took out are ok but was just overheating due to the "no fan" situation. I might pop them back later to see if it works out, if not I just buy another set, DDR2 are pretty cheap anyway.

Awesome coxy, at least you found the hardware at fault.. corsair dominator ram I used never overheated, but I did have trouble with using 4 sticks on my board/2 was fine. So in the end I did the unthinkable for me, I sold them all on and bought OcZ ram and never had any troubles.

Corsair and the dominator was always my first choice when building of late, never used to get problems, but seemed my motherboard did not really like using it that much. Sad
