validating game cache only checks files that it knows about.. any additional files like mods or hacks might still break it
to make a complete reinstall quickly, do a find for *.* from under the game folder, sort by file size and delete all the small files (say, everything under 10M) and any mods you have
and then do a game cache check
it will download any missing files and, if they are valid, leave the large files untouched
this should cut the reinstall time down to minutes
also, delete/move anything the game made under your user profile
if you're running a warezed copy with n+1 handmade patches on top, you don't really have a right to complain as the potential of human error or mismatched file versions is very large
try get a direct 1:1 copy from someone with an updated legit game
not trying to 'dis' anyone.. it's just that it's very fragile when it comes to handmade patches with no version checking

It can be something wrong with pirated copy and patching the game. I've got no problems so far.

Don't bother... I bought the retail version on day 1 and since patch 1.3 i can't get past the main menu.

well be happy that you can even launch them, i bought empire total war for 45 pounds , THE Additional Forces Edition, and i cant even launch it as i every time get ctd on startup, i tried evreathing , deleted multiple times, deleted steam , installed different ways, used all kind of patches from people. Doesnt Work, just doent work.

I never had any CTDs before patch 1.3. This one really nailed it! The game isn't even polished and they're selling DLC already. I paid 20 euro more for those 5 or 6 extra units when the game came out and now 14 for 2,5 euro... arghhh!

CTD'd on the AI's turn and now my quick save and auto save are unloadable because they bring forth more CTDs.

I am glad I waited till 1.3 to start a grand campaign. Smooth performance with my pc, everything on ultra @ 1680 x 1050. I think I need a larger monitor to take advantage of my video card. Have to say this has been my best video game purchase ever, so much game for just 25USD. Thank you Steam, Sega and CA!!!!!

I wonder if this game is beyond fixable...
It's a shame, really! The engine is quite nice and i love the kind of battles empire provides (or tries to).

I just want to know how to take troops off the boat in the road to independance tutorial while putting your boats near louisbourg as instructed IN the tutorial...

don't u just land the troops? by selecting the army and then right clicking on land? I did that when the game came out but I don't remember what I did exactly...

If I remember correctly - Select the navy, press the Army tab, select all the units you want disembarked, and rightclick on land - Requires your navy to be right next to land.

The selectio nthingy can sometimes be confusing.
There are main ways to move an army out of a container (city/fleet) you have the click with the mouse andt he drag and drop.
The main issue when landing troops with ships is findin ga location that troops can land. The cursor icon should change when you locate a suitable location.
So select a navy carrying troops and then just click on land where the ico nchanges and they should automatically land if they have enough movement points.

well i get no army tab in 1.3 while in boat at all.. i see one icon on dragging them from ship to land a gold like little man and a curved left pointing arrow as if to say move men here. but nothing happens.. will try again i guess.

Anyone getting CDT's and freezes since patch 1.3?
I never had them before but now I can only play for like 10-20 min before it happens.
Windows 7+ fresh install (purchased game).

Bizzar. Been reading at forums all over the place, and there seem to be a lot of peeps with freezes and CDT's. Will dig some more...
And it don't seem to be a OS linked problem. People are getting crashes with basically all OSes, XP, Vista and W7 etc.

I deleted the Creative Assembly folder in AppData, and no crashes whatsoever in a long time for me.
Now I'm thinking about buying the game - But would it be a good idea?
How's the multiplayer action (Skirmishes)?

well for the longest time I couldnt play the road to liberty campaign at all since the game always crashed after the first chapter but suddenly oen day I could. Cant explain it. sicne I didnt install a patch or nuthin. but hey Im happy.

DAM! still getting freezes/hard boot errors. I have been reading a lot of posts over at the "official" forums and at "twcenter"...some ppl say the new (1.3) patch is wonderful, and some say they just get CTD's of freezes just like me.
This is the only game I play at the mo so it really sucks.
Been thinking to start looking at RAM errors and what not, taking out 2 sticks at the time and try etc.
Can't even play one round in the single player campaign as it is. Move some units and buy some stuff and FREEZE!!!!!. If I am lucky I can Alt/Tab back out or Alt/Ctr/Del and kill Empire.exe etc.
Really getting on my nerves at the mo. Clean install, NO MODS!, just plain and simple vanilla game with the latest drivers and the latest patch 1.3...

Not sure if it helps, still try this.
Delete all but latest saves, settings and most importantly saved replays in documents and settings...\The Creative Assembly\Empire\ fodder. I've had problems with crashes on saving game replays and it was solved by deleting old replays.
Also I've looked at enabling those extra DLC units, but it seams its somehow tied to Steam account. I've tested it on two accounts. I tried both on same computer, same ETW installation, both accounts have bought and registered ETW. On mine where I've bought DLC, units appear in game, but if I just log out and change account to the other one where its not bought they are disabled.
