So today (or very recently), NAVIGON has been released for the iPhone.
It's about 1.6 gig of space, however some may see that as a small price to pay for no longer needing to carry around a satnav.
I'm going to try it now, will let you know if i'll be selling my TomTom
ALSO, TomTom this month announced they too were releasing SatNav software for the iPhone over the summer - we'll have to wait and see but it's no doubt going to be better than NAVIGON (doesn't pause music when saying directions, but does let you take calls while running).
Will get back to you.

I've just read installed size is 3gb, but you can open the .ipa in WinRar and remove all the maps you don't want .... handy! Going to put only UK and France on, and see how big it is...!

Having deleted the .map files for all countries except UK, France and Switzerland, file size reduced from 1.7gig to 500mb.
Installing now - expecting it to take up about 1gb installed.

Turned out to only be <500mb installed - v. happy with it. doesn't do traffic (which i presume tomtom will), but in general i am definately going to use this as my satnav in future...
got LOADS of POIs - every shop in my city is listed, including all pubs, car parks etc. and not just "car park", it lists the carpark / shop name! hasn't got contact info for POIs though, so cannot phone them directly (once again, assuming tomtom wil have all this).
time to find an iPhone car mount!

2G doesn't have GPS hardware built in.

having now tried using this in Leeds City Centre, it didnt work for shit. not sure if it was due to it not being mounted, and being hand held. once my car mount arrives i'll test again... might not be as good as I originally thought - due to the crappy GPS sensor in the iphone
